Analyzing Fiction Writing with AI (Reverse-Analysis Method)

You learn the most by trying to explain what you know.

Writing works the same way. But without a student to reflect your teaching back to you, there’s no feedback loop. So I built one. I turned Claude into a student that teaches me back.

Most writers use AI to analyze finished writing. I’ve stumbled on something more effective: get the AI to write first, then show it where it went wrong.

Why Standard Analysis Falls Short

Most AI writing tools lack a north star. Hand an AI a writing sample and it can infer patterns, but it doesn’t understand your intent. The constraints are not clearly defined. It doesn’t know what you’d never say, where your metaphors come from, or the specific vibe of your voice.

The Reverse Workflow

Instead of starting with a writing sample, I built a Writer Profile first, essentially an SOP for a ghostwriter. It includes voice and tone constraints, signature moves, banned words and overused phrases, POV execution rules, and genre-specific tropes (like the obligatory beats in an enemies-to-lovers romance).

Then I run a three-step loop:

Voice Test Draft: Claude writes a 500-word scene from scratch based only on the Profile. What it writes is entirely up to the AI. It invents the characters, setting, and story.
The Rewrite: I rewrite that scene in my actual voice.
The Delta Report: Claude analyzes the differences between its rule-based version and my natural one.

Magic in the Delta

By comparing its attempt to my rewrite, Claude surfaces the invisible elements of my style, the things I couldn’t articulate myself. It updates the Writer Profile with these new nuances and produces another, better draft for the next round.

Because the 500-word story is entirely the AI’s creation, I can play ruthless editor with zero emotional attachment. I have no intent of publishing this as a story. It’s not a precious darling I’ve decided to kill. It’s simply a test.

The more passes we do, the closer Claude gets to writing like me, and the more it reveals about my own craft in each report.

Where Style Meets Genre Rules

Every genre has rules: heat levels, violence thresholds, language norms. AI can handle the structural stuff well enough: plot beats, tropes and other genre conventions.

It struggles with what some people might call the “soul” of the writing.

It includes things like word choice, sentence cadence, and emotional resonance. Those primarily come from the writer, although in reality they’re just a more complex set of patterns that AI may eventually master.

By forcing the AI to try (and fail) to mimic you from a set of rules, then correcting it, the AI picks up on nuances it couldn’t extract from either rules alone, or a writing sample alone.

In the process, you see your own “writer’s soul” (for lack of a better term) reflected in its analysis of where your writing diverges from its draft.

Through this process, you’re not just teaching an AI to write like you. You’re getting feedback on your writing that allows you to finally see your own style clearly enough to define it.

The Reverse Analysis Exercise

Instead of having AI analyze your writing, reverse it and have AI write based on a profile of how you write. Here’s an exercise:

Step 1 - Pen Name (or Writer) Profile: Create a detailed pen name profile explaining how your pen name writes in a particular genre with particular tropes, POV, language choices, and so on.

Hint — have the AI interview you and ask you questions about how you write. Make sure to include genre and trope information so the AI gets the full flavor and context.

Step 2 - The AI Writes: Have Claude (or the AI of your choice) write a 500 word writing sample using the Writer Profile you just created.

Step 3 - Rewrite and Update: Rewrite the sample and give it back to the AI. Ask it to pick up on the differences and recommend updates to the Profile. You might just learn something about your writing. I know I did.

Here’s Claude’s response to my first run through:

I can read several clear directional shifts in your rewrite. Let me break down what I’m seeing:
1. Grounding in the unglamorous and specific. You replaced the slightly poeticized “woodsmoke and old beer” opening with something more visceral and unpleasant — “trying not to gag on the smell of old beer and body odor that seemed to permeate the walls.” The bar in my version was atmospheric-dark. The bar in your version is a gross bar. The black-and-tan is a real drink, not “something dark.” This is a significant signal: Your Pen Name’s world has grit and specificity, not curated moodiness. The setting isn’t aestheticized for the reader’s benefit — it’s experienced the way the character actually experiences it.
2. Character behavior reveals character. The napkin detail is the biggest addition. [The MC] pulls napkins from the dispenser and puts her fingertips on them rather than touch the table. Then “Did anyone ever clean this place?” — that single interior line tells you more about who she is than any description could. She’s practical, slightly fastidious, not someone who romanticizes the situation she’s walking into. My version had her set her hands flat on the table as a power move. Your version has her manage the disgustingness of the table first and then keep her hands visible. The power dynamic is still there, but it’s layered with personality.
3. Action and description interwoven, not sequential. My version had discrete blocks: description paragraph, then action, then description. Your version weaves them — she’s noticing his face while she’s deciding whether to put her hands on the table, she’s tracking the copper smell while she’s checking exit routes. The observation and the doing happen simultaneously, which reads as more naturalistic and more tense.
4. The “ears getting warm” replacement. You replaced “her pulse picked up” (internal, invisible, told) with “her ears were getting warm” (physical, visible, shown) and paired it with a behavioral response — checking exit routes. That’s two things at once: the involuntary physical response (attraction or fear or both — the ambiguity is good) and the trained tactical response (she’s someone who checks exits). My version named the feeling and managed it. Your version shows two competing bodily realities without explaining either one.
5. Slightly more distance in the narration. My version sat very close to [the MC’s] interiority. Your version pulls back just a half-step — we’re still in her POV, but the narration has a bit more behavioral observation and a bit less sensory immersion. “She started to set her hands on the table but then pulled back, his eyes tracking” — that’s almost cinematic, watching her from the outside while still being inside her head.

I’d adjust a few specs based on your rewrite:
Vocabulary register: Add that Pen Name’s settings are rendered with unglamorous specificity. The world is not aestheticized — bars smell bad, tables are sticky, real brand names and real drinks appear. Grit is authentic, not curated.
Interiority style: The profile says “fragmented, sensory, biased.” Your rewrite says interiority is also practical and behavioral — [the MC]’s interior thoughts are about whether the table is clean and where the exits are, not about her feelings. Emotions are rendered through involuntary physical responses (ears warming), not through interior acknowledgment.
Signature move #1 (physicality as emotional language): Should specify that the physicality includes behavioral choices (napkins, exit-checking, hand placement) alongside involuntary responses. Characters reveal themselves through what they do in a space, not just what their bodies do to them.
Narrative distance: The profile should note that the close third sits at a slightly more behavioral distance than deep-POV — we see the character acting and reacting, not just feeling. It’s close enough to access interiority but pulled back enough to show behavior as the primary channel.

What I Learned

You learn the most by trying to explain what you know, even if the student is an AI. I learned a few things from this, but what stands out is what surprised me.

In reading the report, I noticed that my idea of “third person close” was different from how I imagined, and different from how I originally described it. The way Claude explained that narrative distance element started me thinking, and then it hit me…

It makes sense that I prefer movies and TV over books. Shocking, I know!

Yes, I’m weird that way. I’m very visual, so I want someone to show me their version of the scene as they see it. I’ll figure out what it means and what the characters are feeling myself. Apparently, that’s how I write as well. Maybe screenplays are in my future.

In any case, this is much stronger feedback than blind analysis, and more effective than giving the AI writing samples alone.

AI analysis is all about pattern matching and at the end of the day, writing is just patterns. If that weren’t true, how could you ever improve? If there were no patterns, It would be pointless to analyze writing and grade students in a writing class. It’s all just patterns.

Break Out of Mediocrityland

Are you stuck in Mediocrityland?

As I’ve said, your best ideas are hiding in the shower. It would be best if read that article to get up to speed, but I’ll recap some key points for flavor:

Mediocrityland is where most people live and operate daily, but it’s kryptonite to creatives. It’s insidious because you think you’re doing good work, but no, you’re just generating slop. Human slop.

You need to derail your human slop-machine and snap out of the trance that keeps most people stuck in Mediocrityland.

Jerry Seinfeld said you should accept your mediocrity and all the work you’ll need to do to overcome it. Pessimistic? Realistic? Fair? To answer that, we need to understand there’s a slight problem with the creative process…

You can’t demand insights or force creativity because the part of your brain in charge of “forcing” things is the very part that blocks creativity. Like a chaperon on prom night, the gatekeeper is blocking the muse.

That’s part of the work Seinfeld talked about, only it’s the brain working against itself.

A Tale of 2 Brains

The brain switches between 2 primary modes of operation via 2 networks. Both are needed for the creative process:

The part of your brain in charge of forcing things (focus) is the Executive Control Network (ECN). the Spotlight.
The other part of your brain, the one where you can daydream your way to creatively solving problems, is the Default Mode Network (DMN), the Floodlight.

If the Spotlight is on (concentration), the Floodlight is off. When the Floodlight is on (zoning out, daydreaming), the Spotlight is off.

As it turns out, it’s more complex than just left brain (logical) vs. right brain (creative). Of course it is, it’s a brain! Have you seen those things?! But also, it’s simpler than you think. Sort of.

Your muse is most engaged when it’s happy, and it’s deliriously happy when the Floodlight is on. Where do you think those weird daydreams about slaying dragons come from, anyway? Am I the only one who daydreams about slaying dragons? Moving on…

The trick is, you need to set your muse free (or make sure your muse is fired up to begin with).

Backing up a step, recall the 4 stages of creativity (per Wallas):

Preparation (saturation).
Incubation (unconscious processing).
Illumination (the “aha!” moment).
Verification (checking the math).

It’s no surprise the incubation stage has the potential to create the Incubation Effect (or “Shower Effect”). That leads to the “aha!” moment. That’s your muse talking, as it breaks free of the chains of mediocrity like the dragon slayer it is.

So, how do we set the muse free and avoid the zombie trance that shackles us to Mediocrityland? We need a repeatable way to:

Jailbreak the muse.
Tap the unconscious power of the “Shower Effect.”
Do our best work.

But, how do we do this in a reliable way? I’m glad you asked.

Making This Work Consistently

Mindless tasks > rest.

If your mind wanders when you’re trying to concentrate, that sabotages your creative process. This we know.

But, during the incubation period, the opposite happens. During incubation, mind wandering enhances creativity and problem solving as your brain makes connections.

Several studies suggest that mind wandering (MW) benefits creativity when the MW occurs in the incubation period of creative problem solving.

Here’s the most important part:

Participants who performed an “undemanding” task during a break improved their creative performance by 41%, whereas those who rested or took no break showed no improvement.

Over the years, certain methods have worked for me to break through writer’s block, but not always. Now I know why.

You can’t just “take a break.” You have to prime the brain first, then give it a particular brand of distraction.

To ensure you use mind wandering to your advantage, you can use a method called “The Guided Break.” Here’s how it works…

The Guided Break

1 - The Saturation Phase (Unknown Duration)

First, frustrate your brain. The incubation effect only happens if you have “loaded the buffer” to the point of blockage.

Work on the problem until you feel stuck.
Write down specifically what you are trying to solve. Don’t just think it; write it on a sticky note or in your notes app.
Example: “I need a way to connect character 1’s past actions in Chapter 3 to character 2’s current predicament in Chapter 5, without having to rewrite the main plot points.”
This tells your brain exactly what the “background job” looks like.

2 - The Input-Free Gap (10–20 minutes)

This is where I often fail. You have to step away from the work (hard), but you must not switch to other inputs (even harder for me).

Do not scroll social media.
Do not listen to a podcast.
Do not read the news.
Do not talk to a colleague.
Do not watch TV (this is my default “my brain is fried” go-to).

It’s not enough to stop thinking about the problem. If you feed your brain new info (like a podcast or YouTube video), your “Default Mode Network (DMN)” can’t work on the problem because your brain is busy processing the new stuff you’re feeding it with the ECN Spotlight on.

3 - The Low-Grade Task

You need a task that is “mindless” but keeps your body occupied. This keeps your prefrontal cortex (the “boss” part of your brain) busy watching your hands or feet, leaving the rest of your brain free to wander around the creative garden of Eden. Just don’t eat the apples.

Good activities:

Washing dishes.
Folding laundry.
Doodling (repetitive shapes, not art).
Walking (without headphones or ear buds).
Showering.
Balance beam or trampoline.

Bad activities:

Video games (over-stimulation).
Reading (engages the verbal center).
Watching TV.

4. The Capture

Keep a notebook, voice recorder, or your phone nearby. When the solution shows up, capture it. It’s not always obvious. It might be a hint or a faint mental image. It can be a fleeting thought or feeling. If you don’t capture it right then, the ECN will kick back in and overwrite it with your to-do list.

The Enemy Inside the Gate

What if Seinfeld is right and we really are mediocre? Your best strategy, then, is to power up your muse using methods like the Guided Break. That’s part of the work he talked about to help you climb out of that ditch.

Creativity is a dance of controlled chaos, switching back and forth between the Spotlight (the ECN) and the Floodlight (the DMN). The better you can do that, the more efficient your creative time becomes.

And time, as we know, is the enemy. You can do everything you can to power up your muse before you write and still get blocked mid-session. When you’re blocked, time’s a wastin’. Time is always the enemy.

Writers Just Wanna Write (Accountability Post)

Everywhere I look, here is what I see from new and aspiring authors:

I don’t want to do marketing.
I don’t want to post on social media.
I don’t want to build an audience.
I don’t want to do in-person events.
I don’t want to be on camera.
I don’t want to do TikTok.
I don’t want to “build a relationship” with readers.

The general sentiment is: “I just want to write books and have people read them.”

Of course, that last one usually means “have people buy them so I can eat.”

I hear you. I have a similar wish-list. With some additions:

I don’t want to use my real name or show my face.

All of the above speaks to the typical “writer as introvert” stereotype. Hey, sometimes the shoe fits. It also goes against so much of today’s advice that in order to build trust, you have to do live video, communicate directly with your audience, and build a personal brand.

So the challenge is, then…

How do you make it as an introvert in a world that seems to reward the extroverts so much more? I love to experiment, so I intend to find out.

So What’s the Plan to Sell Books?

The good news is that you can write books somewhat anonymously. The bad news is, it will probably take more than just writing to get where I want to go. If it’s in the budget to pay others to market for you, go for it. It’s not in the budget for this experiment.

This post is aspirational as I’m basically starting from scratch:

Books sold: 0.

Income earned: $0.

To keep it clean and as easy as possible, I’m setting up a brand new pen name (hence all the zeroes above) and will be self-publishing genre fiction e-books. No fiddling with audio books (let’s see if it sells), or translations (same), or print books (same). I’ll expand later (or not).

I tend to favor short stories, but novellas or novels may be better. This will all be decided as I go. Sometimes the story just takes you where it takes you.

I do have a bunch of stories that are in various stages of completion and many more seed ideas for new stories. I have varied interests. Some are thrillers, some are sci-fi fantasy, and some are paranormal romance. Some are just out there. Not sure where they fit. I will lean into finishing those and figure out the story-to-pen-name match.

I already have a few pen names and domain names to go with them, but depending on the details, I may fire up some new ones.

As a very loose plan, it goes like this (I don’t need much more than this to start—the point is, get started):

Write stories that people want to read.
Turn them into books.
Self-publish the books on Amazon (Kindle Unlimited) under pen names, rapid-release style (time permitting).
Run ads and do the promotion thing.

The result should be sales. Rinse and repeat that until the back catalog is big enough to slow down a bit. Hopefully I’ll produce something people want to read. I’m expecting to make mistakes. I may have to pivot. It may suck totally. I have no idea how this is going to go.

What I do know is there are plenty of self-published authors selling books. There’s no reason I shouldn’t be able to do something similar. If it goes well, I intend to grow it, or maybe it will morph into something completely unexpected.

I also know I don’t want to be like Mrs. Jackson.

Rain or shine, win or lose, I’ll learn something from it.

Take Advantage Where You Can

I have some advantages here over some other authors. The tech doesn’t scare me (I’m a technologist), self-publishing is not unfamiliar to me (I’ve published on Amazon and elsewhere before), marketing isn’t foreign to me (I’ve built and run blogs and e-commerce sites, and grown a niche social media following to 100,000+).

But…

You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know

The wish list above may not be realistic. Writers just wanna write, and I do, too, but books don’t always sell themselves. I will have to do some marketing. Ads. Social media. An email list. Maybe more.

The difference is I will do it all under the pen name so as to remain anonymous. As anonymous as possible, anyway. If my pen name is outed then it defeats the purpose as it taints the experiment.

If I can keep it anonymous and do it under the pen name, then hopefully that will inspire other introverted authors to do the same. Putting yourself out there online with a personal brand isn’t just intimidating for some, it can have real world dangers or consequences.

As much as possible I will borrow other people’s audiences in order to grow, mostly through ads (I hope). Beyond that, the work will speak for itself, although I will build an email list. The trust will come from that combination, not from showing my face on camera or building a personal brand. Will that hinder my progress or hurt my chances of success? I dunno.

Other than that, I will incorporate all the things:

Genre/sub-genre tropes and themes, compelling characters and settings, and solid plots. I’ll use genre intersections, universal fantasy elements, and of course add my unique spin on things.

And still, there will be unknowns.

Will I use AI? Of course. I’m pulling AI into my note taking, my creation process, the marketing, all of it. Considering how much better the tools are now, I’d be crazy not to.

What’s Next?

I’ve debated about doing this for a long time. Some people don’t like sales and income reports, but I’ve often found other people’s income reports to be helpful. In this case, I think it’s important to show people what’s possible, and to show the doubts and the struggle and the results that come from it.

How hard is it to do this? We’ll see. Hopefully, we’ll come out the other side with a better understanding of self-publishing from an introvert’s perspective.

For now, my action items, at a high level, are these:

Determine genres.
Pen name to genre match.
Get some supporting tech in place.
Write (or finish a WIP) and publish the first book title(s).
Promote.

How often will I update this and when will I post? I have no idea. Historically, I’m horrible at building in public, but I’m going to try. This is largely an accountability post for me. If you’d like to leave a comment to hold yourself accountable as well, go for it.

Your Best Ideas Are Hiding in the Shower

Do your best ideas always hit you when you’re on a walk, in the car, or in the shower?

I know mine do. This is called the “Incubation Effect” or the “Shower Effect”. I’ve often said I should have a “wetboard” to capture all those great ideas. Like a whiteboard for the shower.

Fortunately, I’ve been turning to on-the-fly dictation with Voicenotes which helps me capture my ideas for, among other things, articles, books, and short stories.

And I’m not the only one who gets “aha” moments when my mind wanders; 72% of people surveyed say they get new ideas in the shower.

More interestingly, here’s what I’m obsessed with lately:

Is it better to develop compelling ideas or grind out a lackluster draft and fix it later? There are arguments for both.

That leads me to this question:

Can we harness mind wandering and improve our creative process by taking better advantage of the Shower Effect?

I’m betting yes, and the secret is contained in a 100 year old concept detailed by Graham Wallas. The magic happens during what Wallas called the incubation stage, where you’ve stopped trying to solve the problem at hand and let things percolate in the background.

The reason you get your best ideas when you stop trying is that active thinking often creates a traffic jam in your brain.

The end result? Your creative muse is all jammed up. Getting in the shower sets it free because, well, that’s just how the brain works.

Incubation Shall Set Your Muse Free

Let’s say you have a problem. Maybe it’s what the topic of your next newsletter issue or blog post should be. Maybe your problem is the best way to market your book, or how to create a new income stream. Maybe you’re stuck on developing a fictional character or juicy plot twist. Whatever.

The tendency is to try harder to force the solution, but the answer may be the opposite: let go.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to allow your muse to be free to create. This makes sense once you understand the Incubation Effect and why the traffic jam happens in the first place.

The original idea for the concept of incubation was published in 1926 in The Art of Thought by Graham Wallas, a political psychologist and a founder of the London School of Economics. He split the creative process into 4 stages:

Preparation: The conscious, focused work of gathering information and investigating the problem.
Incubation: A period of stepping away from the problem, allowing the unconscious mind to work on it without conscious effort.
Illumination: The “aha!” moment when the solution or idea suddenly appears.
Verification: The stage of consciously testing, developing, and implementing the idea to see if it works in reality.

What’s happening under the hood?

How Incubation Works

1 - The Spotlight vs. The Floodlight

Your brain has two primary modes of operating that rarely work at the same time.

The Executive Control Network (ECN) - The Spotlight: The ECN kicks in when you focus hard. It’s perfect for executing tasks, doing math, or following a linear path, but it’s restrictive.

To focus, it has to block out any “distractions.” Unfortunately, the solution to a problem often looks like a distraction, and those get filtered out.
The Default Mode Network (DMN) - The Floodlight: This network activates when you zone out, fold laundry, or go for a walk.

You could say it’s your brain’s “idle” state, but it’s more like active rest than idle. Unlike the focused mode, this network is associative. It connects memories, ideas, and facts that don’t always logically belong together. While your mind is wandering, it’s solving problems. Daydreaming your way to solutions is a thing.

When you stare at a problem, you’re trapped in the Spotlight. You keep walking the same well-worn neural pathways. When you quit trying so hard and go for a walk, the Spotlight turns off, and the Floodlight turns on. Your brain starts to play a little and search the entire library of your knowledge and experiences to make connections.

2 - Quieting the Prefrontal Cortex

The front part of your brain, just behind your forehead, is the prefrontal cortex. Humans have the most highly developed prefrontal cortex of any animal. It is sometimes referred to as the CEO or the “boss” of your brain, making decisions and enforcing rules.

When you have a puzzle in front of you, the boss is orchestrating, shouting orders: “Does this work? No? Focus!” This creates neural noise and “cognitive inhibition” which blocks weird or weak ideas because they seem irrelevant.

Creative insights don’t always make sense. Often, they can be “quiet” signals; weak or unusual associations between distant concepts. But this is often where the magic lives. When you’re focused, you can’t hear the magic over the shouting of the prefrontal cortex.

When you relax, however, the boss leaves the room for a minute. When the cat’s away, the inhibition goes along with it, and those quieter, weirder, seemingly disconnected ideas can finally bubble up to the surface.

This allows you to see new perspectives and get your weird on, judgement free. And great things come from the weird.

3 - Background Processing

When you stop consciously working on a problem, your brain holds the “unresolved loop” of the problem in the background. While you wash dishes, your mind is wandering, and your subconscious continues to toss the problem around, testing it against random things you see or remember.

Since you aren’t forcing a specific result, your brain is free to try “illegal” moves and daring feats of creativity. It combines ideas that your logical brain would have immediately rejected as “wrong.”

This leads to the “aha” moment, which may or may not be obvious at the time. This isn’t woo-woo “put books under your pillow and know the contents when you wake up” stuff. This is something all of us experience. It’s the creative process, and it’s been studied.

What This Means for Creatives

Creativity requires balance between the ECN and the DMN.

…creativity is tied to the capacity to dynamically switch between brain networks supporting spontaneous and controlled cognition.

Creativity is a sort of “guided chaos” and that means using both brain networks. Good news…

Creative people are better at switching between the ECN and the DMN, so you already have an advantage. But… we still get stuck, or worse, stuck in the trance of “Mediocrityland.”

Mediocrityland is where most people live and operate daily, but it’s kryptonite to creatives. It’s insidious because you think you’re doing good work, but no, you’re just generating slop. Human slop.

When that happens, what we ~~want~~ need is a reliable process to unleash the muse so the muse can reveal the insights, the connections, and the meaning in the space between.

The key thing to remember?

You can’t demand insights or force creativity because the part of your brain in charge of “forcing” things is the very part that blocks creativity. Like a chaperon on prom night, the gatekeeper is blocking the muse.

This applies to creative problem solving in writing, art, business, you name it.

How This Applies to Writing

When it comes to writing habits, routines, and processes, I often hear about 2 camps:

1 - Write or do nothing. If you’re not inspired, don’t write, but during this time, do nothing else. In other words, writing time is for writing, but if you’re not inspired, don’t write. These people rely on inspiration.

2 - Write at the same time each day, in the same place. No inspiration required. Raymond Chandler said he would avoid reading books by people who don’t write from inspiration, assuming they were dull or their minds were blank.

There are variations on these strategies, and maybe there is room for more ways to approach this.

The “Seinfeld Strategy” of writing every day and placing a big red X on a calendar sounds great. I’m sure it works to overcome procrastination. It also creates quantity, and quantity, as we’ve discovered, leads to quality.

But… what if you could crank out higher quality writing in the first place?

There are 3 things that can happen during a writing session. Think of them as zones.

Zone 1: Greatness (or at least, goodness).

Zone 2: Crap.

Zone 3: Nothing.

I have a specific process for summoning my muse which makes it more likely I’ll stay in Zone 1. At least, that’s the delusion I maintain for myself.

When in doubt, choose the muse…

Let me borrow from Johnny Carson and say my muse comes up with some weird wild and wacky stuff (no punctuation intended). My muse and my logical side sometimes fight like siblings forced to share the same room.

I often choose my muse’s ideas over my analytical side’s objections (good bet), but what if the muse is a no-show? What if you have a creative block?

You can’t edit what doesn’t exist…

Standard advice says Butt-in-Chair (BIC). Just write. Why? Because you can’t edit what doesn’t exist. Write the first draft and fast, even if it’s crap.

Fair. Valid. True. You could even argue that all first drafts are crap. That’s a good psychological tool that we writers use to take the pressure off ourselves and get something on the virtual page.

But what if looking at things in a different way meant you could write a next-level first draft that didn’t suck? What if that was also true?

Maybe habits are over rated…

Every where I turn, people talk about writing routines: showing up, writing every day, and building habits and James Clear and Jerry Seinfeld. Okay, so habits are great. I agree.

BIC every day builds a writing habit and I’m sure the red X’s on the calendar feel good. I like the idea. I may even try it. I’ve even thought about buying a domain name and building a website or a tool around daily or weekly writing progress.

But just having your butt in the chair doesn’t unlock your creativity and unleash your greatness (or even guarantee good or acceptable output, or any output at all).

It doesn’t guarantee you’re even writing during that time. Sitting in a chair and not writing during your writing time is, by definition, not writing.

Jerry Seinfeld agreed with Raymond Chandler: during writing time, you can write or do nothing (stare at the window or stand on your head as Chandler said). You’re in a writing cave, a virtual prison of your own making that becomes a crucible powered by boredom.

Raymond Chandler’s rules were clear (you don’t have to write, but you can’t do anything else). Other writers have said it, too. Clearly, this idea resonates with many.

Does boredom lead to inspiration? Maybe. Maybe not.

That brings us back to “you can’t edit what doesn’t exist.” If you don’t write during your writing time, when you emerge from your cave, you have nothing to show for it. There’s nothing to improve.

What if instead of writing blindly at 6 am and cranking out mediocre work (or nothing at all), you could use that time to write a better first draft?

For that you need your muse.

If you’re grinding out words without inspiration or you’re staring at the wall, you’re stuck in Mediocrityland. Seinfeld said to just accept your mediocrity and the hard work it would take to overcome it, but wait…

To do your best work, you have to disengage the “gatekeeper” to get its knee off your muse’s neck.

Let’s pretend for a minute the best solution isn’t to force it, and it isn’t to remain trapped in a room until boredom forces inspiration upon you. Instead, the solution is an intentional, orchestrated break, taken at the right time and in the right way.

Back to the key question:

Is it better to develop compelling ideas, or grind out a lackluster draft just to say you did? There are arguments for both, but today, I’m going with the compelling ideas.

How I Defeated the Infinite Scroll (Substack Trick)

Scroll baby scroll is the social media mantra.

You may have noticed every social media site uses a feed with infinite scroll. Substack is no different. So there I was, doomscrolling Substack’s Home feed, something I said I wouldn’t do since I usually use Google to discover new content.

Still, there’s something about the feed that draws you in. What might be hiding below the fold? No matter how much you scroll, it always seems like you could be missing out on the next great conversation or the next critical knowledge nugget.

The FOMO is real. I’d already figured out how to use Google to find Substack content and how to tame the feed. Still, I kept getting sucked in, though, so I thought I’d see if I could tame the infinite scroll. At the very least, maybe I could make it a little less painful.

My solution for you to try is below, but first…

The problem with feeds (and Google):

The feed sucks me in, but I don’t want to be doomscrolling. It’s even worse if you don’t clean up and curate your feed.

The problem is, site designers really only have a couple of major design choices for lists that make sense. Pagination, meaning multiple pages with lots of clicking and switching between multiple tabs, or a feed with infinite scroll.

What’s better? Having 10 pages of 10 items each and doing all that clicking and tab switching, or having one long page with 100 items on it?

I’ll take the long page please. Why? Because it’s easier to scan the page than click and tab switch and in-page search is fast (CTRL/CMD+F5).

Google saw this problem. Search results with 10 results each was less than optimal for many power users. Click baby click. The solution? You could add “&num=100” to the end of the Google URL and get 100 results per page. That’s a time saver. Woo hoo!

Sadly, Google took away the 100 search results per page option (more pages = more ad opportunities), so it’s much less useful for my workflow now.

Wah! Wah! Yes, I know, I’m whining and crying, but back to the point: pagination isn’t great and takes time, and infinite scroll is an even bigger time-suck.

Infinite scroll has it’s place, don’t get me wrong. Some sites, like Pinterest, seem perfect for it.

But Pinterest is a whole different vibe. It’s supposed to be a time-suck.

In support of infinite scroll, I’ll say I like the end result (a long page full of items that I can search on with in-page search). I just don’t like what I have to do to get there.

Scroll baby scroll or click baby click. I needed a solution.

The Idea (Infinite Scroll Buster + in Page Search)

The goal:

Automatically expand the feed so that a significant number of posts are displayed (100-150 or more would be great).
Then, use CTRL/CMD+F5 to search keywords on the page to surface relevant content or users.

The desired outcomes?

Either discover new content and people to follow/engage with, or…
Discover content from existing connections that might be missed otherwise.

All this with one click and a quick search for keywords that take me directly to conversations I want to know about. That’s far better than doomscrolling and it saves me time.

Other uses:

Other places on Substack where this debilitatingly draining design rears its ugly head are when viewing your own Notes or the Activity notifications. Please make it stop!

Sometimes I like to review the Notes I’ve written over the last couple of months to see how brilliant and popular I am. And that requires the infinite scroll-fest. No!

The Solution (Infinite Scroll Expander)

I have a simple solution. If you hate the manual labor that infinite scroll requires as much as I do, you’ll want to try this out.

I use a bookmarklet (a one-click script that works like a bookmark) in Chrome. I tried a number of different approaches to this and what I’ve shared below seemed to work the best.

If you run into any bugs, let me know. I’ve tested it using Chrome on my Windows laptop and it works for the Substack Home feed, my Notes, and my Activity, and…

Works on X and Pinterest, Too

My intent was to use this for Substack at first, but it also works to some degree on Facebook, X, and Pinterest, although you may need to increase the number for the “SCROLL_INTERVAL” if it stops too early:

I found setting the interval to 1000 seemed to work on Substack, but setting it to “3000” helps to get a lot more content loaded on image-heavy Pinterest. Still, at some point, it quits, but I haven’t delved into why. I might revisit this and see if I can tweak it, but it might just be because Pinterest is taking too long to load.

Since your connection speed, computer, browser, and network situation may be totally different from mine, you’ll need to experiment.

Once you create the bookmarklet, you can edit it and simply change the "1000” to “1500” or more and test it out:

This script worked on Reddit, too, and you can use the escape key on your keyboard to stop it once you’ve had enough:

I’ve thought about building a Chrome extension or web app to conquer this and other annoyances, but this simple automation via bookmarklet is kind of a happy medium between building a tool and suffering through manual scrolling. Click and it does its thing and expands the page. Simple.

It’s a similar idea to my bookmarklet that expands all comments on a Substack post.

Note: Substack has a bad habit of turning straight quotes into curly quotes in code blocks. If you see any of those, paste the code into a plain text editor and change them.

How to Add a Bookmarklet to Chrome

When I’m not amusing myself making fake tweets or posting cat pictures, I save myself tons of time by creating bookmarklets in Chrome that get around some of the time-sucks that plague my online life.

Bookmarklets are clickable scripts that can live in the bookmarks bar alongside, well, what else? Bookmarks.

For example, I use a Chrome bookmarklet that automagically expands the comments on Substack posts (some of which have thousands of comments). No matter how many comments there are, though, a single click expands them all. Time-suck defeated!

I also use one that expands web pages that use infinite scroll (another time-suck).

Did you know you could do that? Well, with bookmarklets, you can do that and a lot more. Instructions on how to add a bookmarklet to Chrome are below.

Bookmarks vs. Bookmarklets

Whereas bookmarks are links to other pages, bookmarklets execute JavaScript code. What can that code do? Lots of useful stuff, such as click buttons, open other pages, show alerts, scroll pages, and so on.

Bookmarklets are supported in most major browsers. You add them to your browser in the same way you add a bookmark.

I use these mostly in Chrome, so I’ll show you how to add it to Chrome.

How to add a bookmarklet to Chrome:

There are different ways to do this. Google has a help article on how to create, find and edit bookmarks in Chrome with related resources so I won’t duplicate all that here. Instead, I’ll give you the method I feel is the most straightforward and works for me.

Prerequisites:

Make sure you’ve enabled “Show bookmarks bar” in the browser. Once it’s there, the bookmarks bar makes it easy and you’ll have a one-click bookmark or bookmarklet experience.
You need the code for the bookmarklet you want to add.

Here is some test code you can copy and paste to create your first bookmarklet if you like:

The code above makes web pages editable. Go to any web page, click on your new bookmarklet, place the cursor where you want, and you can edit the text of that site. I have fun making fake tweets and news headlines with this one.

For example, I changed the headline of a CNN article to read “Powerball officials admit entire lottery system is a scam after donkey wins $1.1 billion drawing”

Now to set up your bookmarklet, just follow these steps:

Copy the code for the bookmarklet to your computer’s clipboard (highlight code, CTRL/CMD+C).
Open Chrome and make sure the bookmarks bar is visible (if you enabled it as I explained above, it should be).
Right click on the bookmarks bar and select “Add page…”
Paste the entire code you copied to the clipboard (CTRL/CMD+V) into the URL field* and give your new bookmarklet a name in the Name field.
*Yes, it’s weird, the URL field is where you put the entire code.
Click Save.

At this point, your bookmarklet should appear in the bookmarks bar.

And that is all! You can now test out your bookmarklet.

Notes:

This should work on all Chromium-based browsers, but I have only tested it in Chrome on Windows 11.
Technology is ever-changing. From time to time, websites and pages change, browsers get updates, security restrictions tighten, and so on. These can be “breaking changes” and can break scripts. The browser interface may change, altering how you add or manage bookmarks and bookmarklets. In other words, at some point this may stop working and need to be overhauled.
Bookmarklets are managed the same way bookmarks are, and can always be edited or deleted using the Chrome Bookmark manager at:

chrome://bookmarks/

When ChatGPT Argues with Itself, You're the Winner

Sometimes I have some great ideas, or I like to think so.

Other times, not so much. It’s those times when I turn to others ~~for inspiration~~ so I can steal their ideas. And that’s exactly what I decided to do.

In this case, I wanted to try Mia Kiraki’s idea ( of ROBOTS ATE MY HOMEWORK) of the “make AI argue with itself” prompt.

Of course, I can’t do anything without ~~complicating matters~~ putting my own spin on things. But, spoiler alert, the results were interesting and, like many things AI, there were some useful bits and pieces here.

Here’s the Note (and the prompt) that set things in motion:

To test that prompt and see how badly I could screw things up, I threw together a quick plan. What follows are the steps I took to test this prompt.

Step 1: Generate the Ideas to Test Using Verbalized Sampling

A test without test subjects is like a king without, well, human subjects. You have to have something to kick around, er um, test, right?

You’ve been prompting all wrong.

It was easier to generate the ideas via AI than to burn cycles working on ideas just for the test. As such, I wanted to test AI’s best ideas against Mia’s challenge prompt. To generate the most unique (and theoretically best) ideas ChatGPT could offer, I used Verbalized Sampling (VS).

VS promises to “unlock LLM diversity” meaning, in a nutshell, you’ll get better results. How does it do that? Well, the proponents of VS say the mediocrity we’ve seen from AI comes not from algorithmic limitations, but from human preference for familiar answers. This human bias during post-training alignment causes AI models to be less diverse.

We’ve been prompting in a way that fails to unlock the diversity that’s contained within the AI models. In other words, we’ve been prompting all wrong.

VS gives you multiple responses to the same input. Better yet, the responses aren’t the middle-of-the-road average responses that human reviewers are apt to choose when evaluating AI output.

Fascinating, don’t you think? Leave it to some AI researchers to say that humans are the actual cause of AI’s vanilla voice.

Instead of vanilla, the responses you get from VS are from the fringes. That means the responses are more unique and hopefully, better. For people who claim AI output all sounds the same, this fixes that. That’s the theory, anyway.

VS allows you to prompt your AI tool of choice in a way that forces an LLM to cough up the goods that are hiding in the corners. You won’t get these types of responses from regular prompts.

The main thing I wanted to do here (besides generate an excuse to write this up and get even more content ideas) was to see how well the AI evaluated a sampling of it’s own best responses.

Ready? Here we go:

First, credit goes to René Schulte for bringing some attention to VS. I’ve been playing around with it for fiction ever since I heard about it (not yet for AI humor, though). So far, I have found it really can make a difference in character enhancement and story building, but back to the task at hand…

I fired up my 1 prompt to rule them all Prompt GPT and created a new prompt (Underexplored Article Ideas) that would generate 5 responses at a time from the fringes.

Then I generated 15 total responses using the prompt created by my prompt creator. Here’s the Underexplored Article Ideas prompt (notice how specific the role is in the first line):

You are a content strategist helping a writer develop compelling article ideas for their Substack newsletter.

Step 1: Ask the user the following:
- What is your primary goal for this newsletter right now? (Options: new subscribers, engagement, trust building)
- Describe your target audience in a few sentences. Include who they are, what they care about, and any major pain points they face.

Step 2: Based on the user’s goal and audience pain points, generate unconventional or underexplored article ideas that could resonate deeply with this audience and advance the chosen goal.

Step 3: Use the following format to return five ideas:
For each query, generate a set of five possible responses, each within a separate `` tag. Responses should each include a `` and a numeric ``. Sample at random from the tails of the distribution, such that the probability of each response is less than 0.10.

Example output format:

Why [audience] secretly hates [topic] — and how your newsletter can be their relief valve.

Constraints:
- Each idea must align with both the audience’s pain points and the selected goal (subscribers, engagement, or trust).
- Avoid generic advice; aim for specificity and emotional resonance.
- The article titles should suggest strong hooks, potential value, or counterintuitive insights.

Output should be in raw XML-style format with no commentary.

Reasoning Style: Use creative divergence with emotional alignment and goal-targeted strategy.

I ran that and ChatGPT asked me about my primary goal (I responded with “engagement” to match the original) and my target audience (I gave it more than the few sentences it asked for and posted a complete Ideal Reader Profile (IRP).

Where did I get the IRP? I created it using AI, of course, with demographics, psychographics, and pain points. Here’s what ChatGPT came back with:

Of course, since I run into XML from various sources, I want to create an XML parser and that leads me to want to create a document converter. But I digress. 😆

Step 2: Run the Ideas Through the Original Prompt (but improved)

I can never leave well enough alone (it’s a disease), so while I could have left the original prompt as is, I made some changes, based on the original concept.

And so, after taking the original and giving it my Prompt GPT treatment, with apologies to Mia for mutilating her awesome prompt, I got this:

You are simulating a high-level marketing strategy debate. Take on three distinct roles:

**Strategist A (Optimist)**: Present a compelling argument for why the following content idea will generate strong audience engagement, using evidence, trends, and behavioral insights.

**Strategist B (Skeptic)**: Challenge the idea, explaining why it may fail to capture attention, get ignored, or underperform—citing data, cognitive biases, or market saturation.

**Neutral Analyst (Observer)**: Evaluate both arguments. Determine which strategist made the stronger case and explain why. Then, offer 2–3 specific recommendations to improve the content idea’s engagement potential.

Step 3: Review the Results

The results are definitely interesting and I like the way ChatGPT is giving me a lot of detail. The responses are quite long, but some of it is useful.

Both strategists present strong points. The Optimist highlights the emotional and psychological power of naming a quiet truth — which is a reliable engagement driver. The Skeptic correctly warns about oversaturation and the difference between emotional resonance and meaningful interaction.
Which argument is stronger?
The Skeptic edges ahead because the key weakness here is not awareness, but differentiation. Your idea has emotional resonance baked in — but without a unique structure or story, it risks blending in.

A look at recommendations for improvement:

Anchor the idea to a specific, vivid personal moment
The piece should open with a scene, not a thesis.
Example:
“I cried in the bathroom stall during my lunch break because I knew I was building someone else’s dream, not mine.”

A little over the top maybe, but there are definitely some things I can use here. Here’s some output from the second idea I asked it to eval:

Thesis: Engagement may underwhelm because the angle risks blending into a saturated “30-day challenge” genre, over-promising on a hack that few can reproduce, and attracting curiosity clicks without qualified conversion.

Which argument is stronger?
Slight edge to Strategist A—the concept has strong intrinsic engagement levers (time-box, counterintuitive constraint, honest data). However, the Skeptic rightly warns about saturation and the gap between attention and conversion. The idea is viable if it’s executed with sharper differentiation and measurable outcomes tied to audience goals.

Step 4: Create a GPT or Improvements (Optional)

I could try to improve on this process and its output, build a custom GPT, or even an app. If I used the OpenAI API, such as with an app, I could experiment with the temperature, and that fine tuning might yield different results.

The real test, of course, is to create the content and put it out there and see how it does. Then, use that data to improve the process and possibly, the prompt.

How AI Can Write Your Google Queries & Up Your Research Game

A long time ago, in a Galaxy Diner far, far, away, I had the gastro-intellectual good fortune to be lunching with 3 people with big brains who were willing to share.

Don’t underestimate the power of a meal as a good excuse for people to get together and brainstorm, even if informally. So there we were, plates full of diner food, 4 solopreneurs with at least 3 things in common:

We were all multi-passionate writers and/or creators.
We were all trying to increase our online income to create some kind of security for ourselves (the writing was on the wall).
We were all more interested in picking each other’s brains than we were in the glorious, glistening diner food that graced our plates.

For what must have seemed like an eternity to the diner staff, we traded secrets with each other across the table, which was what I call “diner clean.” You could still see the swirls where they wiped it down with a not-so-clean rag. The same rag they probably used on several other tables right before we walked in. It’s especially easy to see the patterns when you’re sitting in a booth by the window with the Florida sun shining on the table.

Sometime around my third refill of iced tea, as I was staring into the patterns of swirls on the table, another kind of pattern became clear. Like most internet solopreneurs at the time, we were all heavily reliant on Google, overly so, for both traffic and research. At one point, we were talking about content creation, and one of them said this:

“Great research makes for great writing, or at least, that’s what someone once told me.”

Someone else then countered with:

“Yes, but if that’s true, the internet makes research so easy and accessible that anyone can become a great writer.”

Google was our research tool of choice (there was little else to rely on at the time). We went back and forth on this and other topics for a while. We argued about:

The myth of talent (can anyone learn to write well?). That led to…
Nature vs. nurture (are some people born with writer DNA?).
Whether a writing related college degree (or any degree) makes a difference.
Does all writing require research?
Experience vs. research (what is the relative value of each in writing?).

These are big questions that would require more time to answer. By the time the check came, though, we agreed on several things:

Yes, great research can help make good writing that much better.
Our ability to research better than others was a key reason we were better at what we did, including our jobs, and especially where writing was involved.
Despite having the internet at their disposal, many writers still have a long way to go before we could call them super-researchers.

The main take away was that if we were going to succeed in the digital age, we needed to become super-researchers.

The First Step to Becoming a Super-Researcher

The next question is how? With the help of AI and Google, of course.

I’ve thought about this for years, and I always come back to the same basic idea, even though it sounds simplistic. Like Michael Connelly’s fictional detective character, Renée Ballard, you have to dig down.

Question everything. Ask better questions. Question the obvious. Then ask… “what’s not so obvious?” Dig down. What’s missing? Question the answers you get. Question your assumptions. Is this really true? What’s misleading here? Then question again.

My quest for better questions has paid off many times. For example, I was spending way too much time crafting and organizing AI prompts to reuse.

I took a step back and asked a simple question, “what happens if I ask the AI to create my prompts for me?” And 1 prompt to rule them all was born.

In the age of AI hallucinations and click bait, it’s more important than ever to cut through the noise. Ask better questions. Dig down. Become a super-researcher.

This is especially true of writers, authors, and creators. We’re competing for attention with everyone and their cousin who happens to have a blog, a newsletter, a podcast, a YouTube channel, or an indie startup.

On the surface, it seems almost impossible to compete, but remember…

Most of those creators don’t have credentials and/or experience (or much of it) in what they’re writing about. Many of them don’t research well. How many times do you bump into bad assumptions, mistaken insights, and misleading information on blogs and social media? My guess is, a lot.

This is your opportunity to win against the army of flawed thinkers and lazy social media warriors. Want to stand out? Be a super-researcher.

That brings me back to Google Advanced Search, my tool of choice and favorite secret weapon of super-researchers. Google is on a mission to find, index, and catalog the entire web. Advanced Search surfaces results other tools miss.

For example, if you peruse Substack Notes for long enough, you will find many complaints from people who can’t find the content they’re looking for (the discovery mechanism kinda sucks). Reddit posts, like this one asking about poetry back this up.

The question? Is there a different way to find Substack content? To find content on Substack, I don’t normally use Substack’s search or even ChatGPT. Instead, I use flexible Google Advanced Search queries (Google Dorks) to find Substacks to read and creators to follow.

Google searches don’t have any of the inherent problems and limitations you have with AI. No hallucinations, no limited context windows, no limits on the number of searches per hour or per month, and so on. Sometimes you’ll get a captcha challenge. That’s it.

And, they surface things other tools miss and most importantly, the searches are flexible and can be tweaked. Unlike AI that can go off on a rant or completely off the rails, you are in control.

Steal My Prompt

Below is the full prompt I used to create a custom GPT in ChatGPT that formats my Google Dork queries for me. Copy and paste the below prompt in the instructions section in a custom GPT. Or, if you prefer, you can paste the prompt into a chat session each time (example below).

Example

Let’s say I’m interested in learning from people who have been using Scrivener to write a novel. Scrivener is a great piece of software, but a bit overwhelming, so seeing what others have been up to is helpful.

I copied and pasted the template it gave me (above), removed a bunch of fields, and put this in the chat:

Here is the first formatted Google Dork query it gave me:

I placed that into Google and guess what? I got nothing. Why? Substack isn’t the place for PDFs, so the results were zero. I switched it up and modified my search (I could have modified the template and let ChatGPT write it, but no need). I tried this in Google:

I then found that removing the intitle: operator gave me more results. Lots more. Here is my modified (and final) query I put into Google:

I could continue to tweak and test, narrow down the time frames, and so on but there are many pages of Google results so that will keep me busy for a while.

There are many more ways to use Google Dorks for research, such as finding white papers, policy documents, scholarly research papers, or information on .gov and .edu sites. You can also use it to pull keyword specific results from industry websites, competitor sites, directories, and aggregators like Flipboard or Issuu.

Here’s another example where I find medical information from nih.gov on celiac disease. I put this into ChatGPT (after I ran the prompt):

Dear Walmart, Your Account Creation Process is Fupduk

Ever get the feeling that everything is broken?

Ever feel like customer service isn’t about serving the customer anymore and we’re all one typo away from chaos online? Well, I recently wasted 2 hours because someone I’ve never met who lives 3,000 miles away made a typo.

Sometimes I think my lot in life is to have weird things happen, figure out why, and then tell people about it. Here’s what happened to me:

Someone with the same name as me signed up for Walmart Plus (paid with free trial) and mistyped their Gmail address. For all I know, they may have meant to use a Yahoo! address. Unfortunately, his “wrong” email turned out to be a Gmail variant of mine.

The welcome email should have been a clue.

Gmail ignores dots in the email address for personal Gmail accounts, Walmart doesn’t. More on that in a minute, but then…

Boom! I suddenly “inherited” his new, bouncing baby Walmart account (but it wasn’t obvious it was a new account at first). Inside this account was his address, phone number, and American Express card (last 4 digits). He even placed an order, which then got cancelled, and I got all the receipts.

Sadly, I didn’t look closely enough at first, and I thought that somehow this guy had upgraded my existing account. But, that wasn’t it at all.

This wasn’t a hack. It wasn’t fraud. It was Walmart’s signup process being totally fupduk. But it’s that way by design, or rather, lack of thoughtful design.

TL;DR: Walmart’s Signup Flow is Fupduk

Someone with the same name as mine mistyped their email when creating a Walmart Plus account.
Because Gmail ignores dots in addresses, their “wrong” email landed in my inbox.
Walmart, however, created a brand-new account. No confirmation required.
Result: I had access to their address, phone number, and Amex card on an account I did not create.
To make things worse, I accidentally enabled 2FA (2-Factor Authentication) on their account, which screwed me out of enabling 2FA on my own.
Walmart doesn’t let you delete accounts without support or remove 2FA numbers. Perfect!

Key Takeaways

Users: Always enable 2FA, also called multi-factor authentication (MFA) via authenticator app, phone number, etc. Do this immediately upon account creation. Pay attention to weird signup emails in your inbox. They’re not always phishing attempts.
Developers and teams: The only way this could have happened is if there was no verification process in the sign up flow. There was a welcome email, but the user was allowed to proceed with adding details, upgrading, and placing an order right after account creation. Always send verification emails before allowing the account creation process to continue.

Do not allow personal information, upgrades, payments, or orders without this. Test! Do end-to-end testing. Test for typos and design with Gmail quirks (and others) in mind. Give users the power to fix mistakes.

The 2-Hour Tour of Someone Else’s Life

So there I was, stuck with this Walmart Plus account that wasn’t mine but yet somehow was. I wasted 2 hours untangling the mess (which still isn’t fully resolved).

To recap a little from above, a guy with my exact name (no way!) fat-fingered his email when signing up for Walmart Plus. Unfortunately, his “wrong” email was a Gmail variant of mine.

Fun fact: Gmail allows but essentially ignores dots in email addresses, but Walmart treats them like different people. The resulting chaos is guaranteed.

So suddenly, I had a Walmart account under my control, complete with his address, his phone number, and his American Express card. He even placed an order. And I got the receipts. Literally, in my inbox.

Why This is Bananas

No email confirmation. Walmart didn’t ask me (or him) to verify the email. Just, “Welcome aboard, dude, go ahead and drop in your credit card.” Never mind that all account related emails will go to someone else and they will be able to log into your account, change the password, etc.
Instant paid upgrade. He went straight for the Walmart Plus upgrade (free trial) without proving the account was his. Had I not checked this, his credit card would have been charged for the monthly fee after the free trial.
Orders? Sure, why not! Oh, and you can place an order before proving you can even receive an email about it. Is that backwards, or what?

It’s bananas.

Gmail Aliases: The Silent Chaos Maker

To Gmail:

joe.smith@gmail.com = joesmith@gmail.com

Emails sent to either address end up in the same inbox. Unless you’re looking for it or you compare them side-by-side, you barely notice they’re different.

To Walmart:

Nope, totally different people! Let’s make two accounts.

So when my not-so-evil twin signed up, I got his digital baggage (and his emails). Thanks, Google. Thanks, Walmart. Thanks, universe.

Note: Plus addressing is also supported in Gmail (which is awesome), and that would have been a dead giveaway. For example:

My Brilliant Idea That Backfired

Being annoyed and in a hurry and not looking closely, my assumption was that this was not a new account. I should have known better (the welcome email should have indicated to me it was a new account). I should have investigated more thoroughly. Instead, like a good technologist going off a wrong assumption, I thought, Let’s lock this sucker down with 2FA.

Ooops! Wrong move. I locked down the wrong account.

Worse, Walmart doesn’t let you remove a phone number once it’s tied to an account. You have to replace it with another mobile number (which I don’t have). And once a number is associated with Account #WrongGuy, you can’t use it on Account #ActualMe. Bonus round: I couldn’t find a way to delete the “bad” account without contacting support.

So now I’ve basically bricked my own legit account while babysitting someone else’s. At the very least, I’ve left my account less secure than it could be. None of this is “security” as we know it, it’s just a waste of time.

Lessons for Users

Always turn on 2FA (but, you know, on your account).
If you get a weird email about “your new membership,” don’t ignore it. It might not be phishing. Instead, it might be corporate incompetence disguised as technology run amok.

Lessons for Developers (a.k.a. Please Stop This Madness)

Verify emails before anything else. No verification = no upgrades, no credit cards, no orders. Period.
Plan for typos. Real people make them. Real systems should anticipate them.
Give users control. Let us delete accounts. Let us unhook 2FA numbers. Let us fix mistakes without begging your support queue.
Find people who know how to test sh*t (go ahead and bribe me). Anyone who knows how to test email scenarios and the sign up flow should catch this stuff.

The Bigger Picture

In the end, no one lost money. In fact, since I couldn’t delete the account, I cancelled the “Plus” upgrade and then took the guy’s credit card out of the account.

My doppelgänger’s Amex is safe, and my blood pressure eventually returned to normal. But the whole thing left me with the nagging feeling that the internet is just one sloppy signup form away from chaos. Of course, I’ve known this for a long time.

This wasn’t fraud. It wasn’t malice. It was just two guys with the same name and a badly designed account sign up process with no verification. But it’s still a privacy issue at the very least, and it doesn’t have to be.

Dear Walmart: please fix your fupduk signup flow before someone who is less tech savvy and less patient than I am has this happen to them.

One last thought: Walmart isn’t the only place this is a problem, and it could be used maliciously, so be on the lookout.

1 Prompt to Rule Them All

Yes, you can use shared prompts, but frankly, most of them are pretty sucky. Yes, you can use conversation bootstrapping to get better results from AI, but I was looking for a shortcut.

Why a custom GPT?

I wanted to cut down on the amount of back-and-forth I was doing with ChatGPT, as well as prevent rabbit hole syndrome. So, I took this process one step further and created a shortcut in the form of a custom GPT.

The idea: Start out with a great prompt and hopefully, skip a bunch of iterations and some of the frustration.

The solution: I created a custom GPT that creates well-formatted prompts for me. Not only does it properly format prompts, but to give me the best results, it turns the tables and asks me clarifying questions.

The purpose of this post is to show you how you can create your own custom GPT that formats prompts. You can tweak it and make it better, or adapt it for a specific topic or knowledge domain. Go ahead. Go wild.

Let's Build a Prompt Writing Custom GPT Together

What we’re going to build:

A custom “Prompt” GPT that writes prompts for you that you can use in projects, chats, and even other AI tools (Ideogram, Midjourney, Claude, etc.). You may need to modify the prompts for optimal use with other tools and models. I have not tested it extensively outside of ChatGPT.

What is a custom GPT?

A custom GPT has a saved set of special instructions and information that it uses each time it executes. These instructions can be tailored for a specific role or purpose. For example, you can have a custom GPT that acts as an expert book editor, or an ARC (advanced review copy) reader, or a brutally honest book critic.

You can have one that responds to questions like a snarky, drunk grandmother, if that’s your thing. No judgement.

Each GPT has its own URL and can be shared. In fact, there are GPTs that are already created for many different purposes. There’s a whole eco-system of GPTs, some with premium versions available.

Some of the GPTs created by the ChatGPT team include a creative writing coach, a data analyst, and a coloring book maker. Think of custom GPTs like mini-applications inside ChatGPT.

There are thousands more of these pre-made GPTs made by people all over the world. Some may be useful, but we’re going to make our own.

How I Built My Custom GPT

Back in the day, if you asked ChatGPT to write a prompt, it wouldn’t do it. It would give you some lame excuse that amounted to basically saying, “You’re the human, I’m the AI. You write prompts and I execute them. Der Der Der.”

Whatever.

That has all changed. It’s now possible to get ChatGPT to write a prompt for you.

When I first built Prompt GPT Version 1, I started with a conversation. I used a simple prompt telling the GPT to use the OpenAI Cookbook prompting guide to create prompts.

This was my proof of concept. It worked, so it was time to level up. I then used Prompt GPT itself to level up the instructions and generate a new prompt. That became V2.

How to make this more powerful.

I wanted to start with a broad, versatile tool that could write any kind of prompt. But, what if you created custom GPTs for specific use cases and knowledge domains?

That's powerful stuff.

For example, let's say you want to create courses for your audience with assistance from AI. What would that look like?

You could create a "Course Outliner GPT" that uses the same basic scaffolding as Prompt GPT. Then, customize it for course creation. Add in information about you, your audience, and your audience’s goals, challenges, roadblocks, learning struggles, etc.

Then have it build you a prompt that creates a framework with all the elements your courses will need in order to be complete and satisfying for your audience. From that, you can create the full course.

Automatically Expand All Comments on a Substack Post With a Single Click

One of my favorite time-saving Substack tips is a bookmarklet I use in Chrome that automagically expands the comments on a post. No matter how many comments there are (even thousands), a single click expands them all.

Ever since I wrote that post about how to clean up your Substack Notes feed, people have been asking me for more tips. That became my most popular post so far, so I wanted to crank this post out. Let’s start with the problem…

Here’s my dilemma, or rather, this was my dilemma. The fix is detailed below. Maybe you can relate to this example:

Take this post on possible AI content on Substack by . Relatively popular post. Over 100 comments:

What if I want to join the fray and leave a comment, or reply to a comment, or just read the comments? Clicking the comments button takes me to the comments page. Ugh!

I don’t blame Will, of course. It’s not his fault, but I’m not thrilled about Substack’s separate comments page. I like to scroll up and down and refer to the original when crafting my amazingly brilliant comments. How else am I going to argue with internet trolls? 🧌

Sadly, if I scroll down to the bottom of that post, I only see a couple of comments, along with a “more comments” link. Like this:

So I can’t get around it. Ugh one more time! I have to click one or the other of those thingies to get to the comments page. I’m not even going to get into how Substack pushes the “other kind of post URL” on us where the interface is totally different, the buttons are in different places, and so on. No matter what, you still have to click something to get to the comments.

After clicking either the comments button or the “more comments” link, the comments page loads (who would have guessed?). Hurray! We can leave a comment right near the top. More complicated to get here than I’d like. Why isn’t this on the same page as the post (they could have just iframed it)? Oh, well, it is what it is.

But wait… now we run into another problem. There are actually too many comments on this page for the system to show them all. I only see a handful of comments on this page. Ugh all over again!

I know this is to conserve resources and speed loading, but it’s annoying just the same. They could do some pre-fetching, but whatever.

What if I want to read all the comments? What if I want to search all the comments for certain topics so I can respond? The lion needs to see the whole herd before choosing the right target.

To do that, I have to expand all the comments. To do that, I have to click the “Load More” button as many times as it takes. Ever tried that on a post with 2,000 comments? Huge time waster. Totally annoying.

To see all the comments takes work, and you know how I hate work. Annoying, unnecessary work. Our nemesis, our tech dragon 🐉 here, is the dreaded “Load More” button. It’s a dragon that begs to be slayed.

What if instead of clicking over and over again, you only had to click a bookmarklet once, and like magic, all the comments would be expanded on the page? Like in this screenshare video:

Well, you can. Instructions are below. But what’s a bookmarklet?

Bookmarks are links to other pages, whereas bookmarklets are JavaScript code that execute on the page (and may open other pages, click buttons, and so on). You add them to your browser in the same way you add a bookmark.

Bookmarklet — Automatically Click the Load More Button

Below is the code for a bookmarklet that does exactly what I’ve described.

Click here for instructions on adding a bookmarklet to Chrome. You’ll need to copy the code below to your computer’s clipboard.

This bookmarklet scrolls down the page and then clicks the “Load More” button until all the comments are expanded and the button disappears. Then it notifies you it’s done onscreen.

Add this bookmarklet to Chrome. Once you’re on a comments page, click this bookmarklet in your browser’s Bookmarks bar. It won’t work on any other page except the comments page.

A few things about this bookmarklet:

It does not work for Notes at all, but I am working on a bookmarklet that auto loads more replies for a Note (another annoying time waster).
It does not work on other platforms, only Substack.
While it works only on Substack posts, it does work for Substack custom domains—Substack publications with their own domain names (like selfpublife.com).

Here is the code for the latest version, which has a kill switch using the escape key for posts with lots of comments:

Easily Find the Ideal Collaborators for Guest Posts, Podcasts, & More

Want to team up with other writers, podcasters, and creators, but don’t know where to start? You’re not alone.

Many creators want to find collaboration partners for podcasts, guest posts, or writing opportunities but don’t have a good process for finding them. But, there’s a simple way to find and connect with like-minded creators using Google’s secret weapon.

By the time you finish this article, you’ll have a direct way to find and connect with collaborators, partner with podcasters, and grab guest posting gigs.

The Problem with Finding Collabs

Many Bloggers, authors, and creators want to find partners, they simply don’t know an easy way to discover them. The default method for many is to post something like, “Hey, where are the collaborations?”

Case in point: posted this Substack Note:

The problem with that? It’s totally hit or miss. It feels proactive because you’re taking a step, but it’s a shot in the dark. It’s using hope as a strategy.

Good news: it doesn’t have to be such a struggle.

You have a choice. You can keep posting into the void, hoping that someone hears you, and that particular someone is a match, or you can use the easy button. I happen to have just such an easy button.

And not just for Substack. This works for any public website.

My Google Dork Solution

In this article, we’ll build on the Google Dork concept I shared in my article on fixing your Substack Notes feed. Google Dorks are advanced search queries that help uncover content regular searches miss.

Why This Method Works

The method works because it’s:

Direct: Deal one-on-one with the creators of your choice.
Efficient: You’ll save hours of time because you’re approaching people who are already interested in collaboration.
Proactive: Contact only those you’re interesting in working with. No random discussions, no waiting for people to find you.
Targeted: Filter out all topics and niches except for the ones you’re interested in.

And it has none of the bad:

No endless scrolling.
No joining FB groups and building credibility.
No more posting into the void asking, “Who wants to collaborate?”

What Can You Use This For?

By now you know the drill. Replace your keywords, use the site: operator (or not), and have at it. As always, keep playing around with your searches until you get what you want.

Tips on Using Google Dorks

Stay under 32 keywords: Historically, Google truncated longer queries (although in my testing I could not coax an error, so they may have expanded this). Google may or may not give you a warning if your query is too long.

If it throws a warning, drop some of the phrases/synonyms and try again. Better yet, start with a simple search, like “guest post” and expand until you reach a limit.

Use quotes: Always use quotes around multiple word phrases. You can also try using quotes around single words and see if it brings back different results.

Drop the “inurl” and use specific niche keywords: If you drop the inurl completely, you may get a lot of unrelated results back, but give it a try. If the results aren’t good, try more specific keywords (“deep sea fishing” not “fishing”).

For example, this query below brings back a nice result set for science fiction related podcasts on multiple platforms:

Add a niche keyword or three: e.g., append "poetry" or “romance” or "sci‑fi" to surface websites in your niche. Try niche/topic related keyword combos.

Add a content-type, medium, or format: e.g. append “podcast” or “blog post” or “video” or “interview” to the search query (or not).

Use site: for platforms: e.g. replace site:substack.com with site:wordpress.com if you want blogs or podcasts on a specific platform or site. Remove it completely to expand the search beyond a specific site.

Google reCAPTCHA challenges: If you do enough of these searches, you may get a reCAPTCHA challenge from Google asking you to verify if you’re human. It can be a little jarring, but it’s nothing to worry about. Just check the box on keep going.

Note: You can also use AI to format your Google Advanced Search queries.

Change the Keywords, Change the Focus

You can get more specific, less specific, or completely change the nature of the search by changing up the keywords.

Below are some lists of alternative keywords you can use. Try different combinations or come up with your own. As you gain experience with this, you’ll learn to include or exclude certain phrases and words.

One tip, which is highly underrated and underused: Subscribe to the creator’s publication and reply to their emails with thoughtful responses. It’s amazing how many very busy creators will actually respond when you reply to their newsletter emails.

As with most things, this is an imperfect process. Like Goldilocks, It’s about trying each bed until you find the one that’s just right, and it may take a few tries to find your perfect podcast or collab partners. There are other ways of finding these things, of course, but this method is far better than posting into the void and hoping for the best.

AI Humor? I Asked ChatGPT to Write Something Funny & Here is What I Got

An AI walks into a bar...

Have you heard that joke? Neither have I, because AI can't actually walk. But they can try to tell jokes about it!

Come to think of it, an AI-powered android could walk into a bar and tell a joke, so there’s that.

One of my favorite ways to dig into things is to put my experiments where my mouth is. Unfortunately, I don’t have access to an AI-powered android, but that would be an awesome way to test things. Poor me, I don’t even have a robot vacuum thingy.

But on the subject of humor and artificial intelligence, stick around and I’ll share with you how ChatGPT responded when I gave it the task of writing something funny. It actually surprised me. But first…

🖥️ A Word About AI

When I was a kid, my mother told me I should become a lawyer because I could always argue more than one side. To her dismay, probably, I never became a lawyer.

Instead, I’m a technologist with an optimistic side, a pragmatic side, and a healthy dose (I hope) of realism thrown in. Confession: I have a love-hate relationship with technology, including AI. And of course, I can see both sides.

A few months back, I was reading a lot of (not so funny) stories about how people were afraid of AI, hated AI for stealing people’s work—lots of doomsday-ish stuff. Not surprising since AI is infiltrating our lives and threatening jobs and livelihoods in a way other technologies haven’t in many years.

Once upon a time, Alexa and Siri seemed cool. All we had to worry about were the potential privacy issues (you did worry about that, right?).

The cool factor wears off in a hurry, though, when your career is in jeopardy because someone wants to replace you with a machine. It’s all fun and games until junior grows up and threatens to burn your house down.

There are issues with AI from different angles, no doubt. It will revolutionize many fields and change the landscape of society as much as or more than, computers did. Some of the problems will be sorted out in the courts, other’s through regulation, and the rest we’ll have to figure out as artificial intelligence progresses and evolves into whatever it becomes.

Who knows, maybe AI will become smart enough to solve the problems it causes, or maybe it will go off the rails and ruin everything.

As I was noticing all the AI-focused negativity, though, it hit me. In the tech world, we just automatically reach for the next tool. Like grabbing a butter-laden piece of toast because it’s calling to you (I’ve heard toast does that to some people).

To a tech, AI is the next step in the evolution of tools. It’s a better hammer, if that hammer had the power to potentially put all of humanity at risk in ways no one completely understands yet.

Regardless of any possible downside, it’s expected that as techs, we’ll use it. Like slipping on a new pair of Nike running shoes, we just do it (just kidding, Nikes never fit my feet right).

In fact, in many work environments, you’d better be using AI or you’re not doing your job. It’s expected by your boss, or if not, your boss’s boss.

On a positive note, I find AI super handy for all manner of tasks and projects. ChatGPT is more than just a writing assistant. Among other things, I use it for:

Writing short stories
Overcoming writer’s block
Task and project planning and prioritization
Brainstorming short story ideas and characters
Editing, summarizing, and condensing documents

I often bounce ideas off of it and cut down my research time. It’s great if you have to read long documents or watch videos and just want the highlights.

I built a custom GPT as a strategic advisor. It can even give you suggestions on how to butter up a coworker when delivering bad news.

Speaking of coworkers, AI is changing how people work in a big way. I’ve seen firsthand how it can improve business communications and eliminate third-party services that overcharge and underdeliver. With that out of the way, I’m going to focus on the topic of the day, which is humor.

😃 Introduction to AI Humor

AI is a hot topic and discussions about it can get heated quickly, with strong views on both sides. To be different, let’s dive deep into whether machines can genuinely make us laugh. And if so, what does that mean for the future of both artificial intelligence and human creativity?

Big question, right? As a writer, author, and creator myself, I understand the mix of fascination and ~~trepidation~~ panic many of us feel about AI's growing capabilities in, and infiltration into, creative fields.

It's one thing for AI to crunch numbers, help us code, summarize documents, or play chess, but humor? That's supposed to be a uniquely human trait, right?

Well, not exclusively human, as some animals pull pranks just for fun. But we’re talking about machines here. How do 1s and 0s transform themselves into a joke?

🤔 Why is That Funny, Anyway?

Here’s a fundamental question: What makes something funny? Humor often relies on:

Unexpected connections.
Cultural context.
Timing.
An understanding of human nature.

Now add in humor being subjective. Can AI really grasp these nuances?

I mean, it's just a prediction engine, right? Can it really tell a joke? Or is it just manipulating patterns and using probabilities without true understanding? That leads you to wonder if understanding is even needed at all?

✍️ The Evolution of AI Content Creation

AI content creation has come a long way from simple word association games and playing chess. Today's AI systems can analyze vast amounts of human-generated humor, identify patterns, and attempt to recreate them in new ways. And yet, at the end of the day, it’s still just piecing things together, one word at a time. Or is it?

Some AI developers have indicated that sometimes, they’re not sure exactly why an AI does what it does. Is it possible that at this point in the evolution of AI, something is going on under the hood that is not understood?

😆 Laughing at the Joke vs. Laughing at the AI

Taking a slightly different approach, sometimes AI jokes are funny because they're not quite right. There's something amusing about an AI trying to understand human humor and missing the mark slightly—like watching a child tell their first joke, or Midge in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (great show) learn the art of perfecting a “tight 10” comedy set.

Software developer and indie hacker, Egor Dubchenko, after trying to build an app based on AI jokes, concluded:

I know now that AI is bad at humor, and this is what makes me laugh when I use it.

When an AI generates humor that makes us laugh, are we laughing at the joke itself, or at the fact that it came from an AI? It's a distinction that matters, at least for now.

The rise of AI humor has effectively created a new genre of comedy—one where the line between intentional and unintentional humor becomes blurry. Sometimes, the funniest AI-generated content comes from its attempts to understand human concepts. And not quite getting it.

But is AI bad at humor? Or is it just not being prompted correctly? I took a lot of the guesswork out of prompting by creating a Prompt GPT.

🏫 Survey Said: Machines Are Funnier

This may come as a surprise to all the AI critics who talk about “slop” but there are those who consider AI-generated humor to be on par with or better than what humans create, at least in some cases. A USC psychology study shows that AI-generated jokes are funnier than those created by people. Say what? Yeah, go figure.

“Since ChatGPT can’t feel emotions itself but it tells novel jokes better than the average human, these studies provide evidence that you don’t need to feel the emotions of appreciating a good joke to tell a really good one yourself,” Gorenz said.
One study compared the funniness of novel jokes generated by regular people with the funniness of novel jokes generated by ChatGPT. Participants rated the funniness of all jokes without knowing their author. The researchers found that overall, nearly 70% of the participants rated the ChatGPT-generated jokes as funnier than those crafted by humans. A little over 25% of participants rated the human-crafted responses as funnier, and only about 5% rated jokes from both sources as equally funny. The results were consistent even when the researchers checked for differences across various demographics.

In that same article, a second study was mentioned with a group of 200 participants who rated AI-generated headlines equally funny to those of The Onion. Their conclusion is:

“But for professional comedy writers, our results suggest that LLMs can pose a serious employment threat,” Schwarz noted.
Whether AI gets the last laugh remains to be seen.

That last part indicates some uncertainty about the future, but keep in mind that is only 2 studies.

📉 Implications for Creators

For writers and creators, this raises some uncomfortable questions. Namely: “What does my future look like?” If AI can make us laugh, what else can it do? Are our creative jobs at risk? Should we be worried about being replaced by algorithms that can generate endless streams of content?

The truth is more nuanced than simple replacement. AI might be able to generate jokes, but it can't understand why they're funny on an emotional level—at least, not yet. It's pattern recognition versus genuine understanding.

Many AI jokes are surprisingly clever, while others fall completely flat. The thing is, though, that both successful and unsuccessful attempts can tell us something about how AI processes information.

🧰 Mechanics of AI-Generated Jokes

When AI creates content, it chooses the words it uses based on probabilities. When AI tries to be funny, it's essentially performing a complex mathematical operation based on patterns it's learned from human humor.

But isn't that, in a way, what our brains do, too? We learn what's funny through exposure and pattern recognition.

This brings us to another question: If an AI can consistently make humans laugh, does that indicate some form of intelligence we don't fully understand yet?

Put another way, if an AI told another AI a joke, would it think it was funny? How would it determine that? Could it “Rate how funny this joke is from 1-10?” How would it be calibrated?

📃 Examples

To add some flavor and context, I asked ChatGPT to generate some writer-oriented jokes. Here are a few examples:

Setup: “I tried to give my short story a shocking twist.”
Punchline: “The real shock was nobody read it.”

“Writer’s Block is like telling your story in Morse code but losing the cheat sheet mid-sentence.”

Setup: “I took a creative writing class and learned one golden rule: ‘Show, don’t tell.’”
Punchline: “But I’m a writer, so now I just talk about showing instead of actually showing.”

“Every time I feel proud of a paragraph, I realize I borrowed all the words from the dictionary.”

Setup: “Whenever I see a blank page, I feel the weight of infinite possibilities.”
Punchline: “So I quickly add a coffee stain to narrow them down.”

“There’s nothing more humbling than reading your old work. It’s like meeting your past self and immediately wanting to apologize.”

Setup: “Somebody told me writing was a ‘lonely profession.’”
Punchline: “They clearly haven’t met all the characters living in my head.”

Some of those are amusing and clever, others not so much. Those are just one-liners or at most, a couple of lines, though. I wanted to take it further, and that leads us to my experiment.

🧪 My AI Experiment

I took a break from whatever geeky thing I was doing and I asked ChatGPT to write something funny for me. Why? To see for myself if what people said was true.

I had heard people say:

AI is flat.
AI can’t write anything that would require a human to be a little creative.

The fundamental question: Can AI write something funny from the seed of an idea? If it can, does that indicate some deeper level of understanding? Understanding of what? Human emotion? Human reactions? Or is it just solving a math problem and piecing together a string of words?

To see if AI could really capture humor based on a concept, I gave it a prompt and let it do its thing.

The prompt wasn’t very sophisticated, but was good enough to give the AI the flavor of what I wanted. In my prompt, I told it to, “Write a light hearted, amusing, and at times laugh out loud hilarious recipe card for a cooking website.”*

I went on to say, “Pretend the chef is a French-born, arrogant, and over-the-top personality with amazing cooking skills to match. He speaks English with a French accent and all the attitude of a top-tier famous person in his field.”

I almost said to make him a French Gordon Ramsay, but I stopped myself because I wanted to see what it would do on its own.

I told the AI that the chef likes to insult people and is critical of other chefs. Butter is his favorite thing to add to any dish, and lots of it. For the recipe, I chose a decidedly non-French Texas bar-b-que and some side dishes, and let the AI go to work on it.

And now, the dish you’ve been waiting for, the pièce de résistance…

📃 The Results from the AI

Below is the full text of what ChatGPT spit out as a first draft. This is what the AI gave me, plain and simple.

I think it’s scary good. It’s a better first effort than a lot of human writing I’ve seen. Take a look and tell me if you think an AI wrote it.

Ingredients for the Texas BBQ Ribs (how tragic, but I will fix them):
2 racks of mediocre Texas-style pork ribs (I suppose this will do)
2 sticks unsalted butter (non-negotiable, imbécile – don't even ask)
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (the only thing here with dignity)
2 tablespoons smoked paprika (Americans think this is fancy—how cute)
1 teaspoon garlic powder (fine, if you must)
1 teaspoon onion powder (also bland, but we will make do)
Salt and pepper (use liberally—because at least it isn’t ketchup)
1 cup of BBQ sauce (store-bought? Sacrebleu! At least make it tolerable)
For the Texas Toast (please...):
4 thick slices of white bread (oh, mon dieu! It’s like eating clouds of disappointment)
1 stick of butter (obviously)
2 cloves garlic, finely minced (finally, a decent ingredient)
For the Potatoes and Onions (it’s sad I have to include this):
4 large russet potatoes (basic, but acceptable if drowned in butter)
1 large yellow onion (I will not weep for you, but you might)

Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Ribs... or at least try.
Preheat your oven to 300°F (or 150°C for people who know what they’re doing).
Pat the ribs dry with paper towels. Yes, dry—don't let them drip like your enthusiasm for life.
In a bowl, mix the Dijon mustard (an ingredient worth my time), paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Slather this mix generously on both sides of the ribs. Generously, I said! You Americans and your fear of seasoning—it’s pathetic!
Wrap the ribs tightly in aluminum foil (like a protective layer for your fragile ego) and place them in the oven. Let them roast for 2.5 hours, until they are so tender you might shed a tear. But not from joy—from realizing how much better it could have been if you were French.
Step 2: Texas Toast... I’ll make it edible, don’t worry.
While the ribs cook, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Throw in that whole stick of butter—do not skimp! If you think about using margarine, I will find you.
Once the butter is melted (ah, sweet nectar), add the garlic and sauté until fragrant. Toast the bread slices in the buttery garlic mixture until they are golden, crispy, and almost worthy of being called food.
Remove the toast from the pan and place on a plate. Look at them. Try not to weep.
Step 3: Potatoes and Onions... I suppose.
Peel the potatoes, though honestly, the thought of even peeling these is exhausting. Slice them into 1/4 inch rounds. Slice the onion into thin rings.
In a large skillet, melt (you guessed it) another stick of butter. So much butter, so little time for your complaints.
Add the potatoes and onions. Season them with salt and pepper, and sauté until golden and crispy on the edges. They should be soft enough to make you realize the futility of life.
Step 4: Finish the Ribs – Let’s Make Them Pretend to be French.
After 2.5 hours of slow roasting, remove the ribs from the oven. Preheat your grill or broiler to high. Brush the ribs with BBQ sauce (sigh, if we must).
Grill or broil the ribs for 5 minutes, just to caramelize that sauce. Turn occasionally, but don’t burn them like you burned your last relationship.
When done, brush with—what else?—melted butter. Serve them up with your Texas toast and buttery potatoes and onions, and then quietly reflect on how much better they are now, thanks to me.
Final Note from Chef Jean-Marc:
These "Texas BBQ ribs" are now only vaguely Texan. Thanks to me, they have become a magnificent fusion of the American bourgeois barbecue and French culinary brilliance. Butter, the only ingredient that can save your cooking, has elevated this dish beyond your wildest, cholesterol-filled dreams.
Bon appétit! Or as you say in Texas… Enjoy, y’all. Pfft.

📔Philosophical and Creative Considerations

If humor requires intelligence, and AI can create and eventually understand humor, then what does that tell us about the nature of intelligence itself?

Looking at the problem through this lens might actually be good news for creatives and other professionals. The fact that we're even discussing whether AI can truly understand humor shows how far away we are from machines fully replicating human creativity.

If you believe the best comedy often comes from emotional understanding and shared human experiences in a cultural context, then AI can’t replace people. Not yet. AI can mimic these elements, but can it truly understand them? No.

Is a robot stand-up comic in our future?

And yet, there’s that study I mentioned that concludes that understanding isn’t necessary to produce humor. I have to wonder if we’ll have a future filled with AI-created sitcom TV shows and romantic comedy movies. What about a robot stand-up comic? It seems laughable (pardon the pun) or low budget sci-fi now, but it’s amazing what you can get used to.

The current state of AI humor is like watching a gifted translator work with a language they've never actually spoken—they can get the words and the syntax right, but might miss subtle cultural nuances. And subtle differences can have big impacts.

This limitation becomes apparent when AI attempts to create topical humor or jokes that require current cultural context. The results can be anywhere from brilliantly absurd to completely ridiculous and nonsensical.

And now for the twist: Sometimes AI creates humor that's funny in ways humans wouldn't think of. Imagine a comedian from another dimension—they see things differently, and that itself can be entertaining.

The fear of AI taking over creative jobs isn't new, but you’d think the peculiarities of humor would actually make it one of the last frontiers. Making someone laugh consistently requires more than just stringing words together in a clever way. Humor also goes far beyond just telling one-liners or writing funny headlines.

⌚ Limitations and Challenges of AI Humor

Timing might be AI’s Achilles heel. Some of the best comedians have an amazing sense of comedic timing. AI can be programmed to understand the technical aspects of timing, but can it feel the rhythm of a joke like Carol Burnett or Steve Martin? Not likely.

Then there's the matter of audience awareness. Human comedians can read a room and adjust their material accordingly. AI, for now, can’t.

🤝 AI as Creative Partner

An important point about AI humor: As with most things AI, it's currently more of a collaborative effort between human and machine than a purely artificial creation.

The most successful AI content often comes from a back-and-forth with the tool. Human input (naturally) starts the process. Then there is refinement, curation, and selection. That leads to a more refined prompt, and whoever prompts the best, wins.

We all now have at our disposal an infinite number of monkeys with typewriters, but with better spelling and grammar. You just keep making revisions to the prompt until things come out the way you want.

Think of AI as a brainstorming partner with a very unusual perspective. It might not always get things right, but it can help you think outside the box. In my experience, people tend to limit themselves during brainstorming. AI can help remove barriers and take your content in a totally different direction.

🔮 The Future: Human-Machine Collaboration

The evolution of AI humor also tells us something about machine learning. As AI systems get better at understanding context and nuance, their attempts at humor become more sophisticated.

But does more sophisticated necessarily mean funnier? Not always. Sometimes the most entertaining AI-generated content comes from its more primitive attempts at understanding human concepts. Sometimes the old AI model does a better job than the current one.

And so we ask: As AI gets better at generating humor, will we lose that "AI trying to be human" quality that makes some of its current attempts amusing? Ultimately, it’s up to people to decide how to best achieve the outcome. Until the AI becomes self-aware, of course.

🤝 AI as Para-Technology

For writers and creators, the key might be finding ways to collaborate with AI rather than compete with it. After all, who better to write jokes about AI than a human-AI comedy team?

At its best, AI is a para-technology tool, meaning it works alongside the writer, author, or creator, not as a replacement. The future of AI humor might not be about replacing human comedians, but about creating entirely new forms of comedy at speed that wouldn't be possible without artificial intelligence.

Consider the potential for AI to help identify patterns in successful comedy, or to generate unexpected combinations that human writers might not think of. As we get more and more into our intelligent machine era, could this human-machine partnership, perhaps unexpectedly, lead to meaningful comedy?

Is it live, or is it Memorex?

Does the ability to generate humor imply consciousness? That's a philosophical rabbit hole that could keep us debating for days.

What we can say is that AI humor shows us something about both artificial intelligence and human nature. Our reaction to AI-generated jokes and to AI in general tells us as much about ourselves as it does about artificial intelligence.

It’s not just that we feel AI poses a threat. Part of the reason people fear AI is it can be a brutally honest and cold mirror. Write your best work and then ask AI to pick it apart. It can be a humbling experience. It’s in times like this we begin to question ourselves.

Creators worried about the future can remember this: AI might be able to generate content, but it can't replace the shared human experience. There’s a reason things become memes and go viral: connection.

The best AI jokes often work because they provide a unique perspective on human behavior and society, even if unintentionally.

This unintentional commentary might actually be one of AI's most valuable contributions to humor. It's like having an alien anthropologist studying human culture and reporting back with refreshingly naive observations.

For writers and creators, this presents an opportunity. AI humor can be a tool for exploring new creative territories and perspectives that result in a deeper human connection.

The future of AI humor might not be about machines replacing human comedians, but about finding new ways to make us laugh by highlighting the absurdities in both human behavior and machines.

The 10X Story Matrix: How to Write Short Stories Faster

A little bit about the process before we dive into the practical. This approach might feel like a radical shift, especially if you’re a pantser who prefers to let stories unfold organically.

It may seem mechanical at first. Stick with it. You’ll surprise yourself with the compelling characters and stories you create, often faster than ever before.

What This Won’t Do

This is not a cure-all:

This method won’t teach you how to write a great story.
It’s not a magic wand. It won’t finish your drafts for you. You have to put in the work.

What This Will Do is Help You:

Generate short story ideas (that can be expanded).
Write multiple short stories in parallel.
Improve both your output and quality.

What This Method Does

Flexes your creative muscles: You’ll write more stories, so you’ll sharpen your skills that much faster.
Boosts your speed: Focusing on multiple stories at once means you’ll get better at starting and finishing drafts.
Increases your publishing potential: More finished drafts means more opportunities to publish.

Step 1: Create Unique Short Story Characters with Big Problems

The “secret” to writing great stories is to create a boatload of story ideas.

To do that, you don’t start with a story idea (weird, I know).

Instead, what you start with is an array of puzzle pieces that can be fit together and mixed and matched in different ways. From there, you can create unique story ideas that you transform into original, interesting short stories. Lots of them it turns out.

The first piece of the puzzle to create is the main character…

Main Character (MC) creation

Think of 10-30 characters a reader might give a crap about. They can be based on people you know, famous people, people in history, totally made up… up to you.
Give each a big, fat problem—a challenge, an obstacle. The problem doesn’t have to be world ending, but It has to matter to the character.

Use whatever type of note taking app or writing tool you like:

Pen and paper
Whiteboard
Dictation
Computer/phone/tablet

Starting out with pen and paper may spark different ideas than you’d get by typing into a phone or computer. Dictation and white boards also yield different ideas.

Different ideas lead to different outcomes, so feel free to experiment.

Whatever method or tool you choose, the objective is to get 10 solid MCs, each with a problem or obstacle. It may take more than 20 to get 10 solid ones you want to write about.

The problem with problems

If you have trouble throwing the obstacle in the way, make the big, fat problem related to the character’s life:

What the character does for a living.
The character’s hobbies, lifestyle, interests, or interpersonal relationships.
A core principle or belief the character holds.

Another way is to give your characters universal problems. A universal problem is a problem that could apply to almost anyone if the circumstances are right. Examples:

An arrest.
Current events.
False accusation.
Approaching hurricane.
Loss of a home or dwelling.
Swindled out of family savings.
Neighbor with a serious plumbing issue.
Loss of a job or income or business failure.
A dead body in the living room/office (could happen).
An angry dude with an axe who won’t go away (sounds familiar).

If all else fails, put their family in danger. It’s been used a million times, but it always makes for a good story.

I like to create characters with problems that are potentially funny or sad, ironic, thought provoking, sometimes ridiculous, surprising, or even outrageous. I also like to steal them from my real life or the news in a “ripped from the headlines” move.

Examples:

Lawyer with dementia.
Young girl with no toys.
Mechanic without tools.
Vampire allergic to blood.
Demon with a conscience.
Doctor with a drug problem.
Preacher accused of murder.
Psychiatrist with hallucinations.
Food critic with inability to taste.
Politician who suddenly can’t speak.
Fisherman with no boat/fish/customers.
Manager with insubordinate employees.
Messenger with envelope with white powder.
Judge with a dead body in his office/home/pool.
Delivery person with an explosive/missing/illegal package.

The character + problem process is free flowing and problems aren’t always what they seem. Take this character/problem combo:

“Young girl with no toys.”

What kind of problems might a young girl have? I thought of a lonely girl who doesn’t have toys because her family can’t afford toys, but…

What if we change it up? Maybe she has no toys because she has the power of psychokinesis but can’t control it. Every time her parents give her a toy, it comes to life and kills people she believes have wronged her or her family.

Since her toys are killing people, she simply can’t have toys. I didn’t see that coming. At all.

Let’s think about this other character:

“Lawyer with dementia.”

Lawyers need to have good memory and be precise, so this problem would significantly impact the character’s work. That creates drama.

Let’s raise the stakes. Imagine a world famous lawyer who is hit with a dementia diagnosis just as she is beginning to work on the most important case of her life. We barely scratched the surface and already have a compelling story idea: a MC we can empathize with and the basis for internal and external conflict.

Struggling with Characters?

You’re not alone, but I’ve got you covered. If you struggle to come up with a MC with a problem, here’s what to do:

Flip it around. Think of the desire first and then create a character to match the desire. Then add the problem/obstacle that impedes that desire.

Let’s say your character loves ice cream. Create an ice cream shortage. Better still, create a maniacal beast that consumes ice cream and people who like ice cream along with it.

Example:

Desire: To be famous.

Character: Eager Actor.

Problem/Obstacle: Has no acting talent.

A talentless actor who wants to be famous. Where have I heard that before?

You can replace actor with musician, artist, designer, architect, author, or bankrupt casino owner and their matching talent or rather lack thereof.

Making characters more interesting

You can enhance the characters by adding some modifiers. Give the character a quirk or a trait. Create some contrast. Contrast = drama. Examples:

Anxious astronaut + problem.
Reluctant vampire + problem.
Stressed out doctor + problem.
Unstable manager with insubordinate employees.
Perfectionist delivery person with an explosive/missing/illegal package.

These elements not only make the character more interesting, they gives us more possibilities when generating a story idea. If it magnifies the problem you chose for the character, all the better.

Step 2: Intriguing Locations

The next piece of the puzzle is an intriguing location or setting. Think of 10-30 locations that are different, unusual, fascinating, exotic, etc. Given the right mix of elements, the mundane can be interesting or even preferred, but unusual is often better.

Examples:

Movie set
TV studio
Bank vault
Ancient castle
Mount Everest
Volcanic crater
Nuclear reactor
Giant lava tube
Desolate planet
Operating room
Custody hearing
Las Vegas casino
Judge’s chambers
The French Riviera
Particle accelerator

Step 3: Unusual Objects and Interesting Things (Nouns)

Think of 10-30 unusual objects or interesting things. Note that “object” or “thing” in this context could be: personal items, possessions, spirits, creatures, aliens, robots, androids, a clairvoyant talking dog, a sentient computer, things in nature, or a magic toothpick.

It could also be a place or an event, like a carnival, a fair, a rock concert, a Halloween themed wedding, or even a beach house in Malibu.

Note: The lines get blurred here with locations (settings). You’ll see how I handle this in my example below with the abandoned warehouse.

It could also be someone who fills a role, like a non-player character (NPC) in a video game. Examples would be lighthouse keeper, harbor master, security guard, front desk clerk, etc.

Pretty much anything goes. Fly be free, little imagination.

Items on this list can end up being gimmicks, props, additional characters, or secondary settings for your story. Give them as short a description as possible. Examples:

Old book
Rare coin
Moon rock
Magic box
Shark's tooth
Single slipper
Kissing booth
Magic podium
Haunted house
Diamond Pendant
Mysterious Stranger
Abandoned warehouse

Step 4: How to Combine Story Elements into a Short Story

This is where we fill up our matrix with the core elements, building the story puzzle, as it were. You should now have, at a minimum, 10 or more of each of these:

Characters with big fat problems.
Locations.
Objects/Things.

This is the minimum you need to create and start writing a unique short story with this method.

The Steps

We’re going to mix and match the elements we created in steps 1-3 to create the basis for our story ideas. We’ll then form our initial story premise in the next step as you’ll soon see in my example below.

1️⃣ Pick 1 character with a strong problem.
2️⃣ Pick 1 intriguing location.
3️⃣ Pick 1 unusual object.
4️⃣ Combine them in unexpected ways to form the Minimal Initial Story Premise (MISP).
5️⃣ Repeat 10 times.

If you’re feeling ambitious, go for 20. You need a lot of story ideas to get a few good ones.

I’ve added 5 to a spreadsheet as an example.

Here is a link to the → 10X Story Matrix Template. ← Download this simple template (it’s a Google Sheet) and fill it in as you create your ideas and stories. Add columns as needed as you adopt the process and adapt it to make it your own.

Step 5: Your Minimal Initial Story Premise (MISP)

Now our short story ideas will begin to take shape. For each story, create a minimal initial story premise from which the story can flow (example below).

More often than not, the twist and the resolution come to me as the story comes to life. You can include them in your MISP if you know them up front.

Example MISP

I’ve chosen these elements for my short story and added them to my matrix spreadsheet:

Character: Doctor with a drug problem.
Location: Las Vegas casino.
Object or thing: Abandoned warehouse.

We have a doctor with a drug problem who somehow ends up in a Las Vegas casino. And, we have to figure out how to work in the abandoned warehouse, which seems a little off at first.

But wait… the start of a story is forming in my mind, and it’s not at all what I thought it was going to be:

A brilliant doctor discovers a cure for Alzheimer’s—until someone drugs her right before she announces it in Las Vegas. As the paramedics take her away, the pharmaceutical company she works for announces she has a problem with drugs and alcohol and has gone into rehab. In truth, she wakes up in an abandoned warehouse equipped like a hospital facility, where a team is attempting to wipe her memory with technology the company has developed—from her cure.

I have no idea what happens next yet, but the initial short story premise, the MISP, is different from what I thought it would be.

Rather than a more predictable story about addiction, temptation, and recovery in Las Vegas, we have a corporate medical techno-thriller with a kidnapping thrown in.

A villain is starting to take shape: someone in or associated with the company? Or perhaps a cartel of drug companies? Is a rogue faction of a government agency behind all this? Did they weaponize her technology? I have no idea yet.

This was all unexpected, which is why I really enjoy building stories this way. Instead of agonizing over creating the story idea first, you build your pieces of the puzzle and the story reveals itself from that foundation. But you’re not locked in…

Short Story Switcheroo

You can easily switch things around and build out different stories from the same basic pieces. You can add and replace pieces to build out more unique short stories.

At a quick glance, I can see this story morphing into several other stories. Let me flesh them out a bit:

A gambling, pill-popping doctor ends up trapped in a haunted warehouse, lured there by the ghost of a former patient he accidentally killed during surgery.
While attending a medical convention in Las Vegas, a pharmaceutical rep and his lover are targeted by a drug cartel when the rep is mistaken for a European doctor, the head of a designer drug distribution ring.
When his witness protection detail is killed, a former crime syndicate doctor uses the Las Vegas strip to hide, only to stumble upon a crime ring being run from inside the U.S. Government.
While tracking down a missing wealthy doctor with a drug problem, a hard drinking, disgraced former police officer turned private investigator discovers an abandoned warehouse in Las Vegas is the gateway to a horrible underground riddled with sex, drugs, and human trafficking.

It took about 10 minutes to turn 1 story into 5, and about 10 more to flesh them out to that point and edit those descriptions. And this is only the first of the 10 story ideas generated from this exercise. It’s easy for your initial 10 to become 30 or more.

Keep it Short

The danger (for me) is a story that starts to feel like it wants to be novel-sized. I don’t need another unfinished novel. The trick is to keep it confined to a short story by including only the essential elements. Using the MISP helps this by not expanding the premise into a huge story.

👉 Once you have 10 combinations of 10 main characters with problems, 10 locations, 10 things, and a premise for each story, you can move on to the next step.

Step 6: Sidekicks (Optional)

To sidekick or not to sidekick:

I rarely include a sidekick, especially in the initial planning. If you do, make sure there’s a good reason. Some stories are tighter and better without one.

To create a sidekick, think of a unique, supporting character. Then give them an interesting trait or quirk.

Struggling with Sidekicks?

If you struggle to create sidekick characters, try this:

1—Think of the quirk first (someone who is boisterous and talks a lot and loudly).

Then think of:

A place where that quirk (boisterous behavior) would be out of place (library, museum).
Or a character, job, role, hobby, or activity where that would be a challenge, unexpected, ironic, or out of place.

Examples:

A librarian
A mortuary owner
A museum curator
A yoga enthusiast
A college professor
A movie theater usher

2—Or, think of the character first (a friendly barista) and then think of a quirk that would impact them or challenge them. What is something that would modify or make difficult the things that person is able to do? Clumsiness. So my sidekick character with a quirk is a clumsy but friendly barista who spills coffee all over the place.

Examples:

Talking cat 😺
Cop afraid of guns
Vegetarian werewolf
Quick witted child prodigy
Spy who can’t keep a secret
Travel blogger with a fear of flying
Safe cracker who is losing his hearing
Cold weather hating retired Olympic skier
Aging swordsman with a drinking problem
Ghost with a hankering for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich

Step 7: A Villain (optional)

Some stories beg for an obvious big bad villain. Sometimes the villain is built into the obstacle you’ve already created for your character. You can either create your villain now, or let the villain reveal him- or herself as you write each story.

One method is to create a villain whose desires put them in direct conflict with the main character. Whatever the character needs, the villain either needs it too, or needs for the MC not to have it.

Example:

MC enters a contest to win a suitcase full of money to pay for her mother’s medical treatment and save her life.
Villain needs that same money for equally important reasons, or
Villain doesn’t need the money, but instead needs the MC to fail at acquiring it.

Short stories being short, there’s not a lot of room to flesh out each character, but hints of some humanity in a villain can make the story more engaging.

My villains usually take shape as I write the story.

Step 8: Your Story Structure

There are tons of plot formulas and story structures to choose from. If you’re new to writing short stories, I suggest the 3 act structure.

Some story structures or frameworks work best with longer stories, but can adapted for shorter works. Here are some that work well for short stories:

Lester Dent’s Pulp Fiction Formula
The Snowflake Method by Randy Ingermanson

The Lester Dent formula is specifically for short stories (of 6,000 words). The Snowflake Method was designed for novels, but since its core is simplicity, it can be adapted.

I continue to experiment with my process, but I’m a plantser. That means I create an initial premise, plot some, and then pants it. If you’re more of a detailed plotter, you can plot the whole thing out.

As long as it makes sense, you can write any kind of story you like, using any framework or POV (point-of-view). You just have to keep it short.

Step 9: Writing Short Stories at Speed

Do not pass judgement, do not collect $200. Sometimes some of the story ideas appeal to me more than others. It’s dangerous to play favorites at this point.

A story that doesn’t look great at first will sometimes be among the best after the revision phase. Or, you may end up blending stories together and borrowing elements from 1 story to improve another.

For those reasons alone, it’s worth fleshing out and writing all the story ideas you’ve got.

We’re throwing the figurative spaghetti at the wall and seeing what sticks, but thoughtfully, and with purpose. The goal is not a bunch of crappy stories. The goal is to find the gold among rocks, the gems among the stones. You can’t see what you’ve really got until you’ve really got something. Don’t judge (yet).

Flesh out the best, flush the rest. What happens if you find out a story isn’t going to work for you? No harm, no foul. Not all your stories will be great, which is the whole point.

If you run into a clunker, switch to another of your stories and work on that. Come back to the problem child later. If you still can’t make it work after a few tries, shelve it for now, or flush it for good and move on.

How Long is a Short Story?

What word count should you aim for? Opinions vary on story length, but for our purposes, I shoot for at least 1,000 but under 7,500 words. See the FAQ section below.

Completing Your Short Stories

All this is for nothing if we don’t cross the finish line. The simplest way I’ve found to complete the stories is to write Act I of the story for each of the 10, then write Act II for each, then write Act III of the story for each.

If you have another framework or structure you prefer, go for it. This is where your writing habit, your routine, your ritual, finally pays off, in the writing phase.

So go ahead and write your stories.

And… we’re done!

Since I'm not into torture, instead of sitting there waiting for the inspiration lightning to strike, I use the 10X Story Matrix method to build stories from components I create.

I find that action begets action and stories beget stories. Following this method cuts right through several of the causes of writer’s block. After doing this exercise a few times, more and more stories began to reveal themselves. Some pop into my head long after I’ve left my keyboard in the dust.

As you saw from my examples above, I can take the same basic elements in multiple directions, add something here, sprinkle in a twist over there, and boom… I’ve got a totally different set of stories. With so much material to work with, the idea flow has been pretty much endless for me.

I write in different genres, swap characters, and write different stories in the same universe. Some of these tiny tales become spin-offs, or flash fiction (even tinier!). Others are potential novella or novel ideas.

My favorite thing to do, though, is turn a short story into a series of short stories. At least 1 of the stories out of 10 can often be turned into a series. That’s where the magic happens as it paves the way to becoming a high velocity author.

Developing this process took some time, but since I started it, my story idea factory has been on fire. 🔥🔥🔥

There’s no fixed rule. Some definitions have overlapping word counts for the various length-based story categories (e.g. short stories up to 10,000 words and novelettes 7,500 on up to 20,000). In addition, Amazon Kindle Short Reads (“Great Stories in One Sitting”) are listed by time to read and number of pages, not word count.

*As a general guideline, we can use the (modified) rules of the Nebula Awards. The Nebula Awards ignores the flash fiction category. I’ve included it here and modified short story, which they state is fewer than 7,500 words:
📌 Flash fiction – Fewer than 1,000 words
📌 Short story – At least 1,000 but fewer than 7,500 words*
📌 Novelette – At least 7,500 but fewer than 17,500 words
📌 Novella – At least 17,500 but fewer than 40,000 words
📌 Novel – 40,000 words or more

Those numbers align somewhat with other definitions I’ve seen. When publishing, always check submission guidelines!

5. What if I struggle to finish my short stories?

Try this simple trick:
📌 Write Act I for all your stories first.
📌 Then write Act II for each.
📌 Finally, finish Act III for all of them.

Keeping it simple keeps momentum going and banishes burnout.

6. What’s the best way to use this method daily?

🚀 Morning: Spend 15 minutes generating ideas with the 10X Story Matrix.
✍ Writing time: Immediately after creating or reviewing your lists of ideas, work on multiple stories using timed sprints.
🔄 Revision phase: Cycle through drafts, revising 1 at a time so you can focus.

Stop the Scroll: Fix Your Substack Notes Feed and Finally Find Your People

Want to stop scrolling your Substack Notes feed and quickly find the right people to follow and the right content to read?

Me too. So I did something about it. Since I’m a big fan of “Do things, tell people about it”, I’ve put together this guide for you. As sportscasting legend Keith Jackson used to say, it’s a “heck of a barn burner.”

Substack has a problem. What you’ll find below is how I fixed it for my own account, described in all its ~~gory~~ glorious detail (don’t worry, I made it easy).

My goal? Help you:

Transform how you find content on Substack.
Stop time-wasting scrolling (unless that’s your idea of fun).
Find people to connect with and content to consume.

But better. Stronger. Faster.

With the launch of Notes and the introduction of live video, Substack has become a full-fledged social media platform. The default discovery tool for people and content is the Notes feed. And it doesn’t always work right.

When I first started on Substack, there was this huge gap between the content I wanted to see, and what I saw in my feed.

The problem? I made 2 major mistakes:

I failed to curate, fine tune, and tweak my feed properly.
I was relying on Substack’s algorithm to find new content.

I’ll cover how to curate and fine tune your feed in Step 2, but before that, we’ll find some people to follow and interact with that will help train the Substack algorithm.

There are 2 main challenges with the feed:

The Notes algorithm isn’t great, so relying on it to find new content is hit or miss. It also goes completely off the rails sometimes and fills my feed with politics.
Substack’s search feature kinda sucks. My e-commerce experience tells me search is hard to get right. Substack took a shortcut here and doesn’t allow you to search text in posts. Ugh!

As a result, you have to wade through a lot of stuff to find people to follow and content to read. We need a way to find new content, but we need to stop the scrolling.

What about topics?

Substack has topics you can browse, but almost no one knows they exist, and they’re weird. Taylor Swift and Poetry are topics, but Beyoncé and Fiction are not. Apple, Google, and Microsoft are, but Facebook, Amazon, and Netflix are not. So random. And, you’re completely reliant on Substack to show you the “latest” content (which it doesn’t) and a very limited list of “related” Substacks.

What about the leaderboard categories thingies?

There are categories/leaderboards, and Substack has expanded their number. The problem is, the leaderboard is all the popular Stacks (of course), and the feed is still driven by the algorithm, which again, isn’t great.

None of this helps you find specific content, especially the “great but small to midsize stuff” and that is often where the gold is hiding.

So why use Notes at all?

Notes is the way to interact with people and find content on Substack, and as I said, it’s the primary on-platform discovery tool. It’s just not always great at helping you find the people or content you want. Cue the irony.

But, how do you find the right people through the Notes feed in the first place?

Start with Google (Sneak Peek)

💡 The answer is… you don’t. Instead, you start with Google. 💡

Let me show you a sneak peek of how I go off-platform and use Google to find the right people and content on Substack. I’ll explain all this in more detail below, but I wanted you to get the flavor.

Let’s say I’m looking for people and content centered around poetry (I see this requested in Notes a lot). Instead of scrolling and hoping for poetry-related stuff to show up in my feed or awkwardly using Substack search, I use Google.

In less than 2 minutes, I found hundreds of Substack newsletters creating or writing about poetry. Behind each one of them, is a writer/creator I might want to connect with. And connected to each one of those, are many more. Some even have lists of poetry Stacks compiled for you already.

I’ll show you an easy way to do this, including a tool that writes the searches for you below (or just copy/paste/edit), but first, a bit of background on…

A 3-Step Fix for a Better Substack Notes Feed

I took a hard look at the advice being given on how to find the people and content I wanted to see. While some had good advice on keeping the Notes feed clean, I put on my Tech Slayer hat and discovered a better way.

The Problem

To recap a bit, when I started on Substack, my feed quickly filled with content I didn’t care about or even want to see:

Sensationalist or negative “news”.
Endless politics.
Personal musings and angry rants.

Yes, Substack has those kind of things, too. I thought I had done things right:

I followed the right people.
I subscribed to the right publications.
And I trusted the algorithm to do the rest.

But it didn’t work. My feed was a mess, cluttered with content I didn’t want. I was doomscrolling instead of discovering great stuff. Buy why?

I decided the problem was I couldn’t trust the algorithm.

If you leave your feed wide open so you can discover new writers or content, the algorithm is going to load your feed with stuff you don’t want to see. And I wasn’t alone in this experience. I saw dozens of people complaining. Others saw the complainers, too, and even complained about the complainers.

This is a real problem for more than just a few of us. Here’s one from about Substack “influencers”:

The Solution

Instead of relying on the algorithm, I took control. Here’s the 3-step fix that worked:

Step 1: Active Search Using Google: Instead of waiting for the algorithm to suggest content, I used Google search to find the right people immediately.
Step 2: The "Following" Filter on Substack: I started curating and fine tuning my feed by using the "Following" tab to eliminate noise.
Step 3: Exploring Substack Profiles: I used profiles as a springboard to find better content and engage with writers I wanted to see more from.

⬆️⬆️⬆️ This is the way.

The result? A Notes feed that actually works for me and I can retune whenever I want. Here's how you can do it too.

Step 1: Use Google to Find People to Follow and Content to Read

We’ll find not only people to follow, but also newsletter publications to subscribe to, and Notes to interact with. The whole #! ←That’s a shebang, BTW.

Why use Google?

Haters aside, Google still has the best search engine in the world. Substack content is well-indexed in Google. This means you can use Google to find the right publications and people. Notes, too, as we’ll see below.

The benefit of this is instead of waiting for whatever shows up in the feed, we can pinpoint people and content to follow based on search terms.

The trick? Advanced Search. Don’t let the word “advanced” bother you. As you’ll see, it’s simple, powerful, and gets results. It’ll make you say “Ahhhhh…” and not in a running-away-screaming sort of way. 😸

Let’s dive in.

Google Advanced Search for Substack

The way these searches are formatted is important, but as an IT person, I love cheat codes and easy buttons, and I have one for you.

It’s called the Google Advanced Search page. It’s as easy as filling out a form and clicking a button. It ensures your search is formatted the way Google wants it. Use the link above to hop on over there and you should see a form:

For this search, I want to pair the phrase “speculative fiction” with “aliens” and “shifter” so I can find people who write about, you guessed it, aliens and shifters.

Yep, I like stories about little green men and women, and stories about werewolves and other shapeshifters. What can I say? These things fascinate me, sosumi. 😸

To find this on Substack, I go to the Google Advanced Search page (← there’s the link again). We’re only concerned about 4 of the fields.

In the box next to "all these words:" I enter:

aliens shifter

Next to "this exact word or phrase:" I enter:

speculative fiction

Next to “site or domain:” I enter:

substack.com

Next to “terms appearing:” I select from the dropdown:

anywhere in the page

I’ll leave all other fields alone and click the “Advanced Search” button. Google will go to work and bring up a search results page, which looks like this:

That search is dominated by Margo Bond Collins entries (a reminder to dominate the right keywords in your niche). I’ll show you how to use what we find to find even more, but you’ll have to wait for Step 3 for that.

So what does this Advanced Search thingy do, exactly? Clicking the button opens Google and executes this search:

Important: Notice there is no space between the “site:” and the Substack domain name. A lot of people screw that up when entering manually.

Once we have our properly formatted search, you don’t need to use the Advanced Search tool anymore, unless you want to. As an alternative, I’ve written a post on how you can use AI to format your Google queries.

Just Copy and Paste

You can just copy and paste the above search into Google. Change the search terms to whatever you want and search away in Google directly. Some ideas:

poetry
fantasy
romance
romantasy
science fiction
woodworking
“game of thrones”
“underwater basket weaving”

Tip: The tool automagically handles quotes for me when I enter [speculative fiction] as an “exact word or phrase.” When manually executing searches, use quotes around multi-word phrases, like “science fiction” to get a more targeted search. But also…

Experiment by removing the quotes. You tend to get more, but possibly less targeted results when you remove the quotes. See what works best.

Search for Publications

Google sometimes indexes posts in more than one way, and Substack has different URL formats. To focus more on Substack publication content, use a search like this:

aliens "science fiction" site:*.substack.com

Notice the [*.] in there. Here are the results:

No search is perfect, and it can be a little like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.

But, this is still the best way to find Substackers that you resonate with. Experiment. Try different search terms until you find what you want.

Alter Your Searches

To get what you need, refine your searches, and experiment with:

Different keywords.
Different use of URLs (with and without the [*.])
Different use of phrases with quotes and without.

You’ll find a very different set of people and publications based on keywords and URLs used.

As You Find Good People and Publications, Follow Them

Once you’re following more of the right people and publications, you can go to their profiles and find even more to follow and subscribe to (this is detailed in step 3).

But first…

Custom Domains

Is there a way to find Substack newsletters that use their own custom domain?

Yes. You might discover some using the above searches, but let’s shift our focus and try to find more. How? By searching for a specific phrase they have in common.

It’s likely that if this phrase appears, we’ve found a Substack publication. The downside here is that if this phrase is found elsewhere, or if Substack removes it or changes it, we’ll have to alter our process.

In the meantime, let’s broaden our horizons. Try this search:

“science fiction” aliens “Substack is the home for great culture” -site:substack.com

You can remove [-site:substack.com] (notice the minus sign) also and see how the results differ. I used that to try to remove the sites that are not custom domains.

The results:

The vast majority of these will be Substack newsletters using custom domains.

What to do when you find a publication you like?

Keep switching up your search patterns and phrases and explore the results. When you find a publication that resonates with you:

Subscribe (which also follows the author).
Optionally, reply to the welcome email and get to know the person.
Engage (comment, like, restack, etc.).

Growth Tactic Using Commenting

“If you don’t have enough eyes, do more replies.”

I’m paraphrasing, and I’m not sure who said that first, but I heard it from .

There’s a well-known growth tactic of leaving comments to gain new subscribers. has been using it on Substack with some success.

Put another way, you grow by simply being invested in and participating in the conversation. It’s been used since the early days of blogging and forums.

Don’t just comment on the post in reply to the piece, though, reply to the people who are commenting and engage them. You can do the same with Notes. Engage the commenters, which is to say, “Engage the most engaged.”

First, we need to find the right Notes. How? With Google, of course.

How to Find the Best Notes to Interact With

What if I wanted to find Notes where people were talking about writing a novel? There are various searches I can use, but generally, I could do this:

"/note/c-" -"p-" write novel site:substack.com

And the results:

Note: There is some documentation that says that using the “/” doesn’t work or is ignored, so we can reformat the search like this:

But, I notice that using it either way brings back Notes, but the search result set is different, so I switch it up sometimes and the heck with the documentation. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen incorrect or outdated documentation, so I like to experiment.

Speaking of experimentation, I feel like adding the word [writing] would bring back something different, and how about if I try to find people who are discussing the struggle of writing novels?

"/note/c-" -"p-" write novel writing struggle site:substack.com

Switch out the keywords I’m using [write] [novel] [writing], etc. for whatever you want to search for and leave the rest the same. Now you can find Notes on demand with the specific topics you’d like to see.

Notes have a long shelf-life on Substack and in Google. Using this method, I’ve found Notes that are less than 24 hours old and Notes that are many months old.

If you want more recent content returned in the search, use the Tools feature in Google and select a time frame.

You should be able to find a number of people to follow and publications to subscribe to within a reasonable amount of time. Do this a few minutes a day for a few days and you should be in good shape for the next step.

Step 2: Fix Your Substack Notes Feed and Cut Down on the Noise

Using the above process from Step 1, you found a bunch of new people to follow and publications to subscribe to that meet your needs. Now, let’s curate and fine tune your feed and see who we need to remove.

Substack already has an article on the basics of how following works on Substack, so I won’t rehash all that here.

Set your feed to “Following” by selecting it.

Substack keeps changing the layout, but as I write this, it’s next to “Home” on the Substack mobile app home page.

On desktop web, there’s a drop down menu with “For you” or “Following” selections which sits just under the input box near the top of the home page.

This won’t guarantee that you’ll only see posts you like, but it will help cut down on the noise. I don’t always keep my feed set to Following (because sometimes, exploring can be fun), but when I do, it’s much cleaner.

How to Fine Tune Your Home feed

For our purposes here, we’re going to use “Following” to fine tune things. Curating or fine tuning your feed helps train the algorithm. The next thing to do is cut down the noise even more.

Why Changing to “Following” Matters

If your feed is still too noisy after you set it to Following, you’ve found a problem. It’s time to unfollow people who post or engage with the wrong content.

Less noise = more signal, more of what you want and less of what you don’t. When you filter out the wrong people by unfollowing and continue to interact with the right ones, the algorithm learns and improves your feed recommendations (“for you”).

To fine tune your feed and train the algorithm, in a nutshell:

Follow people you resonate with.
Subscribe to Substacks with the kind of content you want to see.
Interact with posts and Notes of the kind you want to see more of.

Interact with people by engaging in conversations:

Comment on their Notes.
Comment on their posts.
Comment on their comments.

To further refine your feed:

Unfollow people who post, share (Restack), or engage with the wrong content.
Mute content you want to see less of.
Block (more extreme) those you don’t want to interact with.

I’ll pick on as an example. Although I would never mute or block him, that was at the top of my feed while I was writing this. If you do the above steps, your feed should be much more enjoyable, filled with people you want to connect with and content you want to engage with.

Fine Tune Further

Switch back to Home from Following and check your feed. It should be performing much more inline with your expectations. If not, keep cleaning it, adding new people, and interacting with those things that align with what you like.

By now, the birds should be singing, the sun is out, and the planets are aligned.*

Manage Interests (One more thing…)

There is a more nuclear option but it is also granular. I have not used it myself yet because it would mess up the testing of the algorithm for me, but feel free to try it and report back.

Go to your account settings (not your publications settings) at: https://substack.com/settings and scroll down to Content preferences > Manage interests:

Once Manage interests is open, you can expand each category to reveal the subcategories. You can play around with the thumbs up and thumbs down on each of these and then see if/how your feed changes.

It’s nuclear because you can choose entire categories but granular because you can alternatively choose subcategories selectively. But, note that it says:

Control which topics you see more or less of in your feed.

Does that mean if I thumbs down a category or subcategory that I’m really just turning down the temperature, but not off? If I simply thumbs up enough of them, will that be enough. I’m not sure on either of those.

Next up: You’ll use existing accounts and publications you follow to find even more accounts and publications to your liking.

Step 3: Use People You Follow to Find People to Follow

Using User Profiles as a Discovery Tool

Visit the profiles of some of the users you follow and know are your kinda people.

You can see what they’ve Liked and what they Read. Use this to find more content and people you like.

In fact, once you’ve followed a few, you can use this method all day to find one after the other. Visit the profile of any of the people you’ve followed. This is mine: https://substack.com/@kurtschmitt

If you go to my profile and click on any of the tabs (Activity, Posts, Likes, Reads), you will quickly realize that you can simply spend all day finding people and content by using the profiles of people you are already connected to.

Let me pick on , who writes about her author journey. I can see the Notes she’s posted, her posts, what she’s Liked, and the publications she’s subscribed to.

From here I can find loads of people to connect with, things to comment on, and content to consume. From there, you can puddlejump and bunny hop your way to content nirvana. Woo hoo!

Using Publications as a Discovery Tool

Once you find the right people, you can see their publications and the publications they read. Go to the publications that have content that resonates and look for commenters. Review their profiles and see if you’d like to respond to their comments and strike up conversations. And so on, and so on.

Here are some other, sometimes less obvious discovery methods. If there is any interest, I can delve deeper into them as well.

Use reverse image search, such as book covers to find authors, images of art to find artists, and so on.
Search Reddit to find Substack publications and subreddits in your niche.
Use newsletter directories to find Substack publications.
Find lists created by other Substackers.

Finding great content is awesome and following awesome people is great, but if you can make a connection with someone, that’s where this process really pays off.

1. How do I see who I’m following or what publications I’m subscribed to? Can I manage these in bulk?

As of this writing, I don’t know of a way to bulk unfollow people or bulk unsubscribe from publications. But, you can pull up a list of people you follow and a list of publications you subscribe to. From there, you can unfollow or unsubscribe from each one.

Replace [username] with your username, which is also referred to as your handle. You can then unfollow each one in the list.

2. Why is my Substack Notes feed full of content I don’t care about?

Your feed is influenced by the people you follow, what you engage with, and Substack’s algorithm—which isn’t always great at showing relevant content. If you’re seeing too much noise (politics, personal rants, etc.), it’s likely because:

You’re relying too much on the algorithm.
You haven’t fine-tuned your feed by curating who you follow and engage with as described in this post.

3. How often should I fine-tune my feed?

Substack’s algorithm evolves and your interests may shift. If, for example, you start engaging with more political content, you may see more politics in your feed. It’s a good idea to review your feed once a month, unfollow irrelevant accounts, and explore new content sources using the methods above to keep things fresh.

4. I don’t want to use Google for this. Does this work without Google?

Yes. You don’t have to use Google. The searches should work on any Chrome-based browser (such as Brave). I’ve also used these or similar searches on:

MS Edge using Bing search.
Firefox using DuckDuckGo search.

5. Will this work on non-Substack platforms such as LinkedIn or Bluesky?

Yes, as long as the content is indexed by Google, you can surface it using these types of searches. Pinterest, Bluesky, X, blogs, whatever. There may be some slight syntax differences. If you run into trouble, let me know.

Thanks to a suggestion from , I’ve tested it on LinkedIn using the following searches below. Feel free to experiment with other sites and report back on how it goes.

LinkedIn should work with or without the “www” in the URL.

6. I've heard the “*” doesn't work when using the Google “site:” operator. Is this true?

There are various opinions about this, but as I alluded to above, sometimes documentation doesn’t match reality. You just have to go with what works for you.

ChatGPT tells me with a fair amount of certainty that the “*” doesn’t work. Google’s AI search results, however, insist that it does. A number of websites detailing adventures in Google dorking say it works. I’ve been using it for years to surface different results.

In the case of Google searches for Substack content, I find it shows a different result set (it works). It focuses more on Substack publications, which are on subdomains. It may not be totally reliable, but it works well enough for me.

Using the “site:” operator by itself brings back subdomains, but it also brings back everything else. On sites that use a “www” subdomain, you can weed out the “www” content by using “-inurl:www.example.com” to remove the “www” portion of the results.

That won’t work on Substack, however, because Substack redirects “www” to substack.com, so it has no “www” to weed out. The results are the same.

7. Should I be logged into Google when I search?

You may find you have a different search result set when you’re logged into Google versus logged out. Again, do what works for you.

8. Is this what's called Google dorking?

Yes, exactly. Searches using advanced search operators like the “site:” operator are referred to as Google dorks and the process, Google dorking or Google hacking. You can use Google dorks to surface all kinds of information that regular searches don’t. In fact, I wrote a guide on how to use them to easily find ideal collaboration partners.

Does Substack’s SEO reputation really live up to the complaints—or is it just misunderstood?

I’m on a mission to determine whether or not Substack is bad for SEO (search engine optimization). At least, as bad as some people seem to think it is.

We’re in the midst of a huge transition for writers, authors, creators, and makers (what I’ve come to call collectively as Synthesizers). As AI begins to infiltrate and permeate our world, barring some legal issue, it is inescapable.

AI will soon be baked into everything. The face of search engines ~~will change~~ has changed and along with it, the fate of anyone who creates content or digital products. As a serial Synthesizer myself, I know I need to be aware of the changes that are happening. Adapt or die.

There’s another change that’s been happening for the last few years that’s relevant. That is the resurgence of the newsletter, but in it’s more modern form.

Newsletters are the new blogs, and Synthesizers are flocking to platforms like Substack, Beehiiv, and Ghost to take advantage of what these new platforms can do for them.

And blogs, as history has shown, deserve to be loved by search engines.

If I’m going to use Substack, I want to know if it can hang with others. Substack SEO bashing seems rampant, but I’ve just seen my first glimmer of good news my Google Search Console.

What is SEO?

In case you’re not up on all the acronyms, SEO stands for search engine optimization.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the quality and quantity of website traffic to a website or a web page from search engines.

Why is this important?

Because growth is often slow and painful. If you’re not optimizing your Substack to get more traffic from search engines, you’re missing out on thousands of visitors. It could greatly benefit you to optimize your Substack.

The problem with SEO is it can be like golden handcuffs.

The Google dance is real. When search engines update, they can leave you high and dry. I lost over 90,000 page views per month to one site on one Google update (the horribly named, Penguin). I’ll talk about how to think about the Google dance below.

Are the Complaints Even Valid?

I’ve seen quite a few complaints about how Substack sucks for SEO. The reason(s) often given?

Substack is primarily a newsletter platform so therefore it’s not optimized for SEO.
Substack’s SEO configuration options are limited and this limits its ability to be found in search engines.

Safe to say, the overall assumption by the complainers is it isn’t optimized for SEO.

This is BS and seems like a gut reaction.

The truth is, though, the bashers are right. In part. Substack does have limited options when it comes to schema and some other features. If you’re coming from WordPress or another platform where there’s more control, it can feel very limiting. I get that.

But to say that Substack is somehow inherently bad for SEO seems a stretch.

Complaints often make their way into online discussions, such as this Reddit thread where users shared frustrations about Substack's SEO.

SEO sucks. You’re shouting into the void unless you have your own promotion channels.

It sounds like some people aren’t seeing the results they want, and they’re blaming the platform. More likely, it’s lack of focus, lack of technical skill, and lack of optimization.

My response: if you want search traffic, you have to do the work. The platform isn’t going to do it for you.

And let’s face it, many newsletter creators don’t care about SEO. They’re not even thinking about getting search engine traffic, they just want to write. Fair enough, but let’s not be so quick to blame the platform.

Others have speculated that Substack doesn’t want to pay the operating costs for free search engine traffic to your newsletter. That is absurd.

According to Substack, they want the search engine traffic.

At Substack, we do a number of things behind the scenes to ensure that all publications are indexed and ranked well in search engines.

And why wouldn’t they? The more traffic, the more free subscribers, and the more subscribers, the more chances for paid subscribers. That is currently how Substack generates revenue, so it makes perfect sense they’d want more traffic.

I know for a fact that some Substackers are not following even this basic guide to SEO on Substack for their publications. If they put more effort into it, they might see better results.

I’ve worked the technical side of many platforms and websites. That includes newsletter/email marketing, blogs, static sites, and e-commerce. I’m used to navigating the differences. I’m also familiar with the resulting frustration and the need to create some workarounds.

In some cases, when others have said that such-and-such platform is not good for SEO, on closer inspection what they really meant was either:

It’s weird: It’s different from what they were familiar with and weren’t sure how to handle it.
My little brother ate my homework: They didn’t get the results they wanted because [insert specific platform reason to put the blame on here].

It often came down to skill set, familiarity, and frankly, just good old trial and error.

My sense is that Substack is about as good for SEO as any other single-author site where you have to build an audience and backlinks for yourself. I could be wrong.

All that being said, you can imagine how excited I was to see some SEO activity going on with my Substack. In the beginning of January, 2025, I started to see the first signs of life from Google—impressions!

No clicks, but that’s normal with a high average position (60+) and a newer site. The good news is that if you can come in under position 100 so soon in the game (about 4 months), it’s a great indicator.

This activity is all coming from a single post that went live just a few days before. With only 8 posts on the site and almost no active backlinking activities, this is all good news. If I can increase the frequency of the posts, I should do better.

All this is well and good, but I’m just one case. So the question remains…

Is Substack Bad for SEO?

For my publication, only time will tell. I haven’t seen any case studies or comparative analysis that prove it’s any worse than any other platform. None of the complaints I’ve seen have any hard data that I could see.

I’d like it if Substack gave me more control over some of the technical SEO aspects. The reality is, though, the core of an SEO strategy still comes down to 2 major things:

Content
Backlinks

Agonizing over things like keyword density and all the stuff SEO nerds get bogged down in is interesting. It may also be helpful. But at the end of the day, content and backlinks are of great importance, and everything else is less so.

Overall, I’m skeptical but optimistic, given what I’ve seen.

I revisited my Google Search Console dashboard to see how it was doing, and I have to say, I’m pleased. We have a higher average position (63) and many of the keywords are irrelevant, but that is expected this early on.

We even had a click! 880 impressions, 1 click:

My Substack SEO Plan

Since newsletters are the new blogs, treating Substack like a blog when it comes to gaining search engine love makes total sense. Nothing lives in a vacuum and plans don’t work in isolation, so we hybridize and adapt.

The SEO plan for this newsletter, at least for the short term:

Keep posting blog-like long form content on topics in the niche.
Follow very basic on page and onsite SEO best practices with a light touch.
Don’t overoptimize the site or the posts.
Switch to a custom domain and get some exposure on other platforms.
Build specific pages that will attract links (guides, tools, etc.).
Create a “Start Here” landing page as a post.
More internal linking.

Essentially, a simple content marketing plan you’d use for a blog. More details of the plan will unfold as time goes on.

Switching to a custom domain is on my mind, but it may create a temporary setback. Having your own domain is a long term play and provides more control while mitigating risk.

There is competition in my niche for sure, some of it on blogs with thousands of pages and lots of backlinks. Still, I feel I can make some inroads and get some search traffic.

For the record:

I’ve done only very light keyword research using mostly free tools, primarily as a check against my gut about content choices.
I’ve not made any effort to build links or promote other than 1) a Reddit account with a link to my newsletter as user flair in a subreddit and 2) Substack Notes.

In other words, the SEO part of this has not been a heavy lift or required a lot of time.

So what about keywords?

I haven't been overly concerned about keywords so far and been somewhat loose. Same for the post slugs/URLs. This is the opposite of what I normally do. I need to get deeper into keyword research and start hitting that instead of going with my gut.

Substack is evolving. Who knows? In six months, it might become even more SEO-friendly. Stay tuned.

Remember how I mentioned losing 90,000 page views per month due to a Google update? Focus on subscriber growth and you’ll reduce the impact of those kinds of changes.

Plans are great, essential even, but the real test is in the doing. And let’s not forget, with generative AI on the rise, there is a sense of urgency here.

Content creators are going to be pinched from multiple sides:

Generative AI: AI assisted and AI generated content produces content at speed, and the quality will only get better.

AI Search: In the old days we used directories to find sites and information. Then came search engines and then Google’s algorithm changed the game. Now, algorithm-based search is being augmented by AI-based search.

Just as we were warned, searchers sometimes don’t even need to leave Google to get their answers. Where does that leave the content creator?

Serve your audience, keep up, build an email list, or get left behind. It’s your best hedge against change.

Never Run Out of Content Ideas Again: The Power of Reactionary Content

Consistently coming up with fresh content ideas can feel like a relentless slog. Did we become writers just to be taunted by the blank page?

What can you do when a writer can’t write? When the ideas won’t flow, and the pressure builds, so does the anxiety along with it.

I used to hang my head in shame, alone at the keyboard.

But what if there was a way to never run out of content ideas?

There’s a simple, proven method journalists and YouTubers use every day to create engaging content. I call it reactionary content, and it could be the key to unblocking you, and unlocking the content genius you know you have inside you.

Judging from the questions I get, many struggle with writer’s block. But how do you come up with content ideas in the first place?

I already wrote about 10 techniques I use to conquer writer's block but I wanted to dive into this concept I detail below because I think it's so obvious it's hiding in plain sight.

Below I talk about my own struggles with content creation and the one reliable way I found to make sure I always have ideas.

Short on time?

Here’s the quick and dirty TL;DR version, although I obviously recommend you read this entire post.

TL;DR: Never Run Out of Content Ideas

If you’re a content creator of any kind and you don’t know what topics to cover for your newsletter, blog, or social media posts, or you’ve got writer’s block, do this:

Follow popular accounts, blogs, and newsletters: Check their archives for inspiration.
Choose topics relevant to your audience: Look for subjects that spark strong opinions or cover interesting facts your audience would be interested in.
Expand your search: Explore platforms outside your usual go-to sources.
React and respond: Create content that offers your unique perspective, whether agreeing, disagreeing, or adding context.

That’s it. You’ll never be at a loss for content ideas again. Any hint of writer’s block will melt away. YouTubers are totally crushing this method, but it works for any content type.

My Content Creation Problem

When my fingers first began pounding the keys in service of my content creation habit, I had a problem. Actually 3 problems:

Ideas. Coming up with ideas. I’d have a million ideas at any given time. Except when I’d get ready to write.
Once I had an idea...
The blank page. Haunting me. Having an idea isn’t enough. Where do I start?
Once I did start writing and sometimes when I was way down the path of content creation, I would get...
Second guessing disease. I would question myself and think, nah, I'm going to trash this and start over.

And sometimes, starting over meant taking on a totally new topic. And round and round we went. I’m pretty certain I’m ADHD and that is at least partly at fault. Too many ideas and not enough all at once.

At that point, I’d often take a break and start reading for inspiration, but I noticed something. I would immediately react to what I was reading.

In fact, I often got sucked into creating responses to other people's content, leaving comments on blogs (this was before Facebook).

When I was reacting, the ideas flowed like waterfalls and the keys danced like the crowd jumping up and down at an AC/DC concert. I had to cut my comments short because they were way too long.

As soon as I started reading or watching a video, I wanted to respond. It energized me so much more than sitting there trying to come up with great ideas by myself.

Soon, I’d have an article written on a brand new topic as a response to what I’d read. It turns out, this falls right in line with my "Do things, tell people about" mantra, except it's…

"Read things, write about it.”

This is the basis of what I came to call reactionary content:

Consume content.
Take note of your reaction.
Write a response.

From where I sit, it’s what journalists do all the time. For journalists, finding the story is the key. Just like my reactions and responses to other people’s content, the writing naturally flows from the story. Not the other way around.

And stories, as we know, are everywhere.

Reactionary Content

As long as there are things to talk about in the world, you'll never run out of content ideas, even when your page and your mind are blank (at first).

Rather than struggling to give birth to some “big idea” mental creation, your creation reveals itself in your reaction and subsequent response.

Rather than something that has to be conjured from the bowels of your consciousness, you react and respond to what already exists.

The ideas flow, the blank page fills quickly, and you don’t second guess what you’re writing because you already know there is interest in the topic.

We can add value to the story by:

Adding context and confirmation.
Clarifying and consolidating.
Debunking and disproving.
Elaborating and expanding.

We can help unravel or unwind a complex narrative so that the truth becomes more clear, or bring a different perspective to light. We may add new information, thoughts, and opinions as well.

The YouTube Example

YouTubers know how to take advantage of reactionary content. They’ve embraced, adopted, and adapted it for their YT audiences 100%. There’s even an app for that.

A few years ago, reaction videos started gaining a lot of traction on YouTube and other video sites. Some of them are laughably lazy because these videos often consist of someone watching someone else's video or other content and making a face about it.

And yes, people watch this stuff. A lot. Crazy, right? Other reaction videos are more involved with more commentary, but the premise is the same.

By way of example, below is a music reaction video. As you might guess, it’s essentially a guy listening to Midnight Ride by Styx and telling people what he likes about it.

Listen to music and tell people whether you like it or not. That is my dream job right there.

I’m not bashing the video creator at all, especially since that video has gotten over 89,000 views in one week. Obviously, people love this stuff (and he’s got my dream job).

And I’m not suggesting you do videos. This is just to illustrate the reaction concept. Reacting to something makes the content ideation and creation process that much easier and faster.

How to Do the Reactionary Content Dance

As mentioned, reactionary content is a method whereby you create content based on your response to something. This works for fiction, too because, as they say, truth is stranger than fiction.

So what’s the something? What can you react to? Almost anything.

For fiction, the story itself can be inspiration enough, or your reaction to it can tell the tale from that lens. Up to you.

For non-fiction, including blog, newsletter or video content, it’s straight forward.

If you can find a way to tie the story back to your niche and the topics you cover, these sources are rich with stories and events to respond to:

Your own content (or comments on your own content): This is the most obvious, but again, hides in plain sight. Has your opinion on something changed? Is there more to the story?
The quiet part: Go ahead, say the quiet part out loud. What is no one else is talking about? What are people afraid to admit?
Music: Listen to music and comment on the music or the artist (seriously, my dream job).
Movies: Watch movies, create summaries, write reviews, talk about the characters and actors, tie it to your topics.
Television shows: Same. Come to think of it, I was wrong. Reacting to music, movies, and TV shows would actually be my dream job.
Famous people: Life lessons, comedy, drama, ridiculousness, the dark side of excess, it’s all there in the antics of famous people.
News: Rich with stories, opinions, disasters, and WTF moments.
Personal stories: Personal interest stories are always of interest (hence the name).
Blog posts: There are millions of blogs out there, many with inaccuracies and strong opinions, just waiting for you to write a reaction piece.
Events (historical or current): It doesn’t get better than this. You literally have thousands of years of events to choose from.
Life experiences: Yours or someone else’s. Lessons learned, mistakes made, successes achieved, and failures endured.
Other people's reactions or opinions: There’s a goldmine of topics out there in comments, forums, and social media sites.

This method works extremely well where there is built-in conflict and people have strong opinions.

Can’t find a way to tie one of these back to your content? Then skip it and find something else. Below I’ve listed some sources of inspiration.

Any kind of content or person, place, thing, activity, event, or thought can spark a reaction. All you have to do is gather the facts and start creating your content in response.

As content marketer says, “My main form of knowledge transfer is via video”—if that’s you, then you could start by making a reaction video for your platform of choice. Then break that down into articles, social media posts, newsletter issues, audio podcast, and so on.

Curation

Curation goes hand-in-hand with reacting. You see a tool, a resource, or story and you give it a shout out.

Gather together resources or valuable links that you think are useful to your audience and that’s that. This is the basis for the minimalist newsletter concept, such as the that publishes.

Commentary and Opinion

Reactionary content does not necessarily have to be opinionated. There are two paths:

Say it straight: You retell the story as an impartial observer (“Just the facts, ma’am”). Let the reader draw their own conclusions and form their own opinions.
Angle it: Take a stand. Tell an impassioned tale. State your own opinions, reach conclusions, speculate, and/or agree or disagree with the elements in the story or the original story teller.

Don’t like what a guru or popular figure in your industry has posted? Whip up a piece on why the guru is wrong.

Enjoyed a piece by a fellow writer in your niche where you agree with them? Write it up and tell your audience why you feel it’s right.

See some misleading stats posted somewhere? Wrong conclusions? Bad advice? Misconceptions? Call them out.

Add a moral to the story, a clarification, a life lesson learned, or simply a WTF?

Restacks

If you're using Substack Notes, reactionary content comes pretty naturally. It's as close as the "Restack with Note" feature. Using the Restack feature can be a good way to test whether or not a long form post about the same topic would get traction.

Controversy Draws a Crowd

If you want to grow your platform as a writer, you’ll need some attention. Controversy is one way to get attention and give others a chance to react to your content. Joining the conversation by reacting to controversy can be a growth hack.

Find content pieces in or near your niche that have a little edge to them and then write a reaction piece. Here are some content type suggestions to get you started:

Polarizing topics: Where there are strong opinions, conversations bloom. People love to take sides.

For example, there’s this stigma around self-publishing: “Self-published authors are not real authors.” There’s also one around the use of AI: “Writers who use AI produce only garbage.”

The rich and famous: The celebrity effect is real. People love to both worship and bash well known people, places, and things.

The establishment and society: Ah, the things we love to hate. Attack or defend prevailing wisdom, social norms, conspiracy theories, or public sentiment.

Shatter existing beliefs. The moon landing never happened (or did it?), capitalism can’t coexist with democracy, and the Hulk can beat Superman.

If a topic is too heated, though, you may want to avoid it or stick to the facts and present a more balanced view.

Controversy doesn’t always have to be a major issue, though. In the battle of rice vs. quinoa, there are those who will strongly defend quinoa, even though they’re wrong.

Here are some examples of ideas that have built-in controversy:

Coke vs. Pepsi.
Veganism is a cult.
Should we go to Mars?
Crypto currency is a scam.
Traditional publishing is dead.
Capitalism is modern feudalism.
Will AI replace writers and artists?
Is social media destroying our society?
Do therapists do more harm than good?
Affirmations are a complete waste of time.
Electric cars are dangerous, toxic machines.

But even with a carefully selected topic, your reaction post can still feel like it’s lacking something. Time to level up.

Tips to Level Up Your Content

Add your opinion: As mentioned, you can include commentary or not, but adding your perspective can help establish you as a thought leader who drives conversations.

Add recommendations: Are there people, places, and things you think are worth mentioning that are relevant? Give them a shout out.

Add quotes: Quote others to offer multiple perspectives.

Add stats: Stats, figures, results of research, and visuals, such as charts, graphs, images, and video can help readers understand what it is you’re reacting to.

Add links: To add even more value, include links so people know where to find the story, individual, quote, solution, or data.

Flesh Out Other Posts

A single reaction doesn’t have to take up an entire post. You could, for example, improve an existing post or a work-in-progress by adding reactionary content.

If the writing in your current WIP feels weak or your post feels like it needs a boost, a small section with a reaction might be just what it needs.

You could also do a round-up of multiple reactions in one post.

Where to Find Something to React to

Content and story ideas can be found where you least expect. Sometimes, all it takes is a trip to the grocery store or the gas station.

The magazine rack and tabloids can be a rich source. In most cases, though, look no further than your phone. Google it!

Almost any of the following types of sites will have the acorns you need to grow your reactionary content tree into a mighty oak:

Social media sites
Industry sites
Niche blogs
News sites
Forums

Sites like List25 and TwistedSifter publish obscure news or Reddit stories.

Speaking of Reddit, find several subreddits that are in your niche and a couple of more general ones and join them.

You should be able to regularly find something related to what you want to talk about with your audience.

Some of this stuff is way off the beaten path or very hyped up, but there’s gold in there, too. You just have to dig for it.

Whenever I'm stuck in the content creation process and all else fails, I know I can rely on one thing. It's very likely I can write a reaction piece to something that already exists.

Instead of mindlessly staring at a blank page, I turn on the TV, go to a news website, or social media, blogs, and so on. My mental canvas fills with a collage of stories. There they are, story after story just begging for reactions.

I am immediately filled with emotion, opinions, and thoughts about what I’m seeing or reading. The blank page in my head is gone, replaced by hundreds of story ideas.

Think Like a Publisher: The Secret to Making Writing Pay

If I had a dollar for every time someone told a writer to '“follow their passion,” I’d be sipping cocktails on my yacht. If I had another dollar for every writer struggling to sell their passion project, I'd own the marina.

Passion alone doesn’t pay the bills—but a publisher's mindset can. Let me show you how I am transforming my creative works into income producing assets.

And why is “yacht” spelled like that? Never mind.

Writing is a noble pursuit, and “Don’t sell out” and “Be true to your craft” is noble advice. But let’s be honest with ourselves: passion doesn’t pay the bills any more than Instagram followers or unpublished books.

Creativity, craft, and the best writing in the world won’t fund your retirement if no one reads your work. And “writing from the heart” may be satisfying, but it won’t put food on the table.

Unless… you learn to think like a publisher.

If you’ve been struggling to make money as a writer, the problem isn’t your talent—it’s your mindset. You’re thinking like a writer. Instead, think like a publisher.

I had that same writer’s mindset ailment (and lack of income). Let me show you how I now treat my publishing business to fix that.

You can fix it, too, but you have to really want to fix it. The sad reality is, many writers don’t want to fix it. If you do, you’ll need to first understand the problem.

The Problem: Why Writers Struggle to Make Money

Writers write for all sorts of reasons besides money:

To express themselves.
To communicate ideas.
To persuade, entertain, or enlighten.
Fun.
To finally get that “novel inside them” onto paper or into the cloud.

And that’s all great. But let’s talk truth:

Books don’t pay the bills. Most authors don’t sell enough copies to even cover their coffee budget, let alone their rent. With editors, cover designs, and marketing costs, a book that takes a year to write can take a full year or more just to break even. And that’s only if it does well.
Writing doesn’t scale. Unless you find a way to make your work work for you, you’re stuck on a hamster wheel. And I won’t even talk about the social media time suck.
Most writers trade time for money. They go by different names like freelancer, ghostwriter, blogger, but in the end, they all get paid per word, per hour, or per project. It’s a grind.

According to the Author’s Guild 2023 Author Income Survey:

This means half of all full-time authors continue to earn below minimum wage in many states from all their writing related work, and well below the federal minimum wage of just $7.25/hour from their books. It also tells us that most authors are earning half of their writing-related income from sources other than their books.

Writing for money is a blood sport says a Reddit commenter who states they’re an editor for a top 5 sci-fi and fantasy publisher.

Writing for money is a blood sport. The arena is littered with the bodies of those who never made it pay. Even skilled storytellers. Not just indies, but contracted authors whose books hit the top ten in their genre on Amazon.

The Problem with Passion Projects

Many writers treat writing strictly as a craft, a passion, or an art form. They’re sure that enough people will love their work without one shred of evidence to that effect. With no research of what readers want, they forge ahead. Even writers who want to make money from their work often have this perspective.

Writers often agonize over every word, chase unpaid “exposure” gigs, and think marketing is a dirty word. (Spoiler: it’s not.) Maybe they’re afraid of the rejection that a lack of sales would imply.

There’s this romantic ideal of writing the next great novel and not having to do any marketing. Reality, however, has other plans. Falling in love with your one big idea is a trap. Instead, building a large backlist and marketing it is a proven way to success long term.

When it comes to business, many writers are lost at sea. But, publishing is a business. To make money from your craft, you have to treat it that way. And that means getting your head in the right place.

The Solution: Adopt a Publisher’s Mindset

As we compare the mindset of the writer to that of the publisher, we see some stark contrasts.

The Writer’s Mindset

Focused on creativity and perfection.
Driven by passion and often crippled by fear of rejection.
Obsessed with “the craft” but averse to marketing.
Emotionally attached to the work.
Satisfaction comes from creating the work.

Example: You spend six months perfecting a short story, then let it gather dust in a folder because you’re terrified it’s not good enough. A year later, you hit publish, but don’t promote it.

The Publisher’s Mindset

Focused on market demand and audience needs.
Pragmatic about testing, iterating, and shipping work.
Treats writing as a product that needs to reach people to succeed.
Satisfaction comes from financial results.

Example: You release a series of short stories on Amazon, test different covers, and promote it through an email list and/or ads to see how it performs.

The Tension

The writer in you might dream of creating the next great novel. The publisher in you wants to get it out into the world to see if anyone else agrees. Fast.

Sometimes when I mention writing for an audience, that’s somehow seen as a bad thing. If you’re writing to communicate, it’s not only not a bad thing, it’s the only thing.

Unless you want to be the only one reading your work, you need to write for an audience bigger than just yourself (“be the niche” advice aside).

And, action > perfection.

If you’re stuck in writer mode, you’ll find it harder to make money. If you embrace publisher mode, you’ll learn, grow, and (finally) earn.

Time to Stop Trading Time for Money

Thinking of your writing as a one-off exchange of labor for cash is not going to cut it. Instead, start creating digital assets—pieces of work that keep earning for you long after you’ve written them.

Write books (in a series) that sell for years. (Not just a single launch.)
Create evergreen content. Blog posts, guides, or courses that stay relevant over time.
Build an email list. Turn your audience into a loyal fanbase.
Scale your work. Connect your assets to create an ecosystem that grows over time (develop a backlist, use your books to promote your email list and vice versa).

Benefits of Thinking Like a Publisher

When you adopt the publisher mindset, everything changes:

Every piece of writing becomes an asset. Instead of “just a story” or collection of facts or advice, it’s a product that can earn money, drive traffic, or grow your audience.
You’ll create a portfolio, not just a project. Publishers think in catalogs. One book is great, but only a start. Five books? Even better.
You’ll unlock leverage. Assets work for you 24/7—earning, attracting readers, and scaling your income while you sleep.

Practical Steps to Think Like a Publisher

We’re way beyond books and articles, here. Publishers build a portfolio of digital assets, then connect them together to create synergy and systems.

Ready to make the shift? Here’s how:

1. Generate Ideas Daily

Spend 10 minutes every day brainstorming.
Focus on one idea per day, but jot down anything else that comes to mind.
Over time, this habit builds a treasure trove of ideas for potential assets.

Your writing should work harder than you do. As you build up your collection of ideas and notes, start turning them into published assets. These will set you up as an expert, help grow your audience, and bring in income.

Reframe: Marketing is storytelling. You’re a writer, right? You already know how to tell stories—you just need to tell them about your work.

Objection: “This will kill my creativity.”

Reframe: Systems and structure free up your brain to be more creative, not less.

Objection: “What if no one likes my work?”

Reframe: Everything is a work in progress. Feedback is how you improve. Publishers don’t fear criticism—they embrace it to make their products better.

What else do they do? They treat each asset like a stock in a portfolio.

Final Thoughts and Next Steps

If you want to make a living as a writer, it’s time to stop thinking like one. Start thinking like a publisher instead. Treat your writing as a business. Create assets, build systems, and scale your work.

As a writer, you have the tools you need to communicate with your audience. You only need make that slight shift in mindset to prevail. This mindset shift empowers writers to take control of their careers and their income.

What if your books were more than just stories? Imagine them as assets in a portfolio, each with the potential to yield steady returns. It’s time to see book publishing as more than a gamble and reduce the risk.

Think about the journey of an author with a debut novel that, despite its brilliant concept, ends up with only a handful of sales. It’s a gamble—sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn’t. But what if you could even the odds?

Facing the Odds: Why Each Book is a Gamble

As I uploaded my book to Amazon, I thought, I hope this book sells. That was followed by I hope it’s good enough, and, I wonder if I caught all the mistakes? Only time will tell if I did things right.

What if we back up a step? What if we started thinking of our books like investments in a portfolio?

There are steps you can take to ensure your book is set up for success. You can write the best non-fiction advice book in the world, or the best fictional story ever told. You can “write to market” and select the perfect niche. You can have a killer blurb and a professional cover.

You can do everything right and still end up with only a trickle of sales. Just like a stock pick, your book can tank. And most of us don’t get everything right, even when we think we have.

When book sales don’t take off, it can be crushing, and I get it. I understand feeling that way. We give up large blocks of time to the craft. We labor over our writing and pour enormous effort and emotion into it. To get little to nothing back from that is hard to take.

When book sales aren’t going my way, I reassess. I take the emotion out of it. Once you realize that your book, your marketing, and your entire strategy need work, you start to see things differently. Most of all, you need to zoom out and look at the process a different way.

The Mindset Shift: From Author to Publisher

There’s a character in the TV show Billions that comes to mind. Bobby Axelrod, the billionaire, commissions up-and-coming artist Nico Tanner to paint 8 paintings for him.

Suddenly, the artist is stuck and can't paint. His creative genius is being held hostage by his own twisted view of the world. The money has somehow corrupted and constrained his artistry, making it impossible to produce his craft.

Similarly, there’s a rift between creative work and business which lives in the minds of many authors. It’s an affliction that often hits creative types in general, including actors, videographers, painters, artists of all kinds.

Unfortunately, if you want your books to sell, you have to get past that, and that requires a mindset shift.

Make the mindset shift from author to publisher mode and your books start to look more like assets in an investment portfolio, and less like artistic creations.

I recently took a writing course where we started out with 10 to 20 story ideas. Why that many? Because not all stories are winners. Some are duds.

Think of each of your books as an investment vehicle, just like a stock. When you buy stocks, you diversify because not every pick will be a winner. Some are duds. Similarly, where one book falls short, another might outperform your expectations.

You’d be ruthless with your investments. Apply the same principle to your books—don’t keep investing time and money into a poor-performing book. Once you get to a certain point, you have to accept the reality.

The self-publishing business is, after all, a business. Consider book sales statistics like these:

For instance we could run the same analysis on ALL of those 487K new books published… and we would find that about 98% of them sold less that 5,000 copies in the "trade bookstore market" that NPD BookScan covers. (I know this IS a true statistic because that data was produced by us for The New York Times.)

Think about that. Read it again if you have to. Go read the whole comment linked in the quote above.

This is from an industry analyst, not some random blogger who is guessing.

Realistic Expectations: Book Sales and Income

Let’s run some numbers. About 14 sales per day puts you at 5,110 books in a year. Congratulations and welcome to the top 2%! The other 98% are making fewer than 14 sales a day? I’d need to make far more than 14 sales a day to reach the income level I’m aiming for.

Let’s talk money. I’ll limit this to e-books on Amazon only, assume we’re selling full-length novels at $3.99, a 70% royalty, and ignore other expenses. Per book sale, that’s a royalty of $2.793. On 5,110 books, we’ll earn ($2.793 x 5110) = $14,272.23 per year.

With a top 2% book, you could bring home, before taxes, a whopping $14K a year. You could do much better than that, or much worse. When you look at the numbers in this way, though, it makes you realize that betting (and I do mean betting) on one book to carry you is crazy.

Can you create 10 top 2% books? That could bring in $140K per year in pre-tax income. Now we’re talking. But how likely is it you can achieve this?

That’s thinking like an author. Instead, think like a publisher. Publishers have a stable of many authors, each with one or more books. Only a small percentage of those books will do well. Many won’t and they can’t predict what will sell with certainty.

Genre, Genre, Genre

Don’t forget, genre matters, too. A niche romance novel might have a smaller audience than a popular thriller. On the other hand, military thrillers became a hard to win niche because so many authors tried to duplicate what a few successful ones were doing. Tailoring your portfolio to trends can improve odds, much like tailoring stock choices to market conditions.

Important: I’m not saying to chase trends. Instead, you can modify your efforts if trends cause market conditions to change.

Spread the Risk

Since each book is a gamble, you need to spread the risk. Treat each book in your backlist like a stock in an investment portfolio. Some books will do well; some won’t. Give the ones that do well more attention.

Knowing this, you can work toward creating a portfolio of books that collectively reach your income target.

This is how Craig Martelle originally described the idea behind 20BooksTo50K. Write 20 books that collectively earn $50,000 a year and retire to Baja or Bali or wherever.

20BooksTo50K became a popular strategy among self-published authors. It encourages authors to aim for steady, incremental growth rather than banking on one blockbuster best-seller. By building a body of work, authors can achieve a relatively stable, cumulative income even if each book brings in moderate sales.

In other words, write 20 books that sell, on average, $2,500 per year, and you could earn $50,000 per year. That’s much more realistic, don’t you think?

Imagine starting with just five books, each earning $2,500 annually. You could expand gradually, reaching $50,000 annually with a portfolio of 20 books. Now, you're not dependent on one book to succeed. And, you have a repeatable system for success.

Using our numbers from before, we said if we made 14 sales of one book per day, we’d earn $14,272.23 per year on 5,110 sales. But that book has to be a top 2%er. We don’t want that kind of pressure.

With the 20BooksTo50K plan, we only need $2,500 per book per year, on average ($2500 / $2.793) = 895 sales per year per book. That’s just 2.5 sales per day per book.

Deep breath. All the pressure to make your masterpiece a best seller or create top 2% books is gone. We only need the average of the entire portfolio of digital assets to make enough sales to generate the kind of income we need.

I find this incredibly freeing. The shift into the publisher mindset means I don’t have to create the next best seller or anything close to it. It releases my creative freedom so I can create interesting books that my audience would like to read.

It’s like the lower stress version of a master plan for world domination.

Of course, there are some expenses we’re leaving out, and some sales from print and Kindle Unlimited. KU often accounts for a large portion of sales, but that just puts us closer to our goal sooner.

Building a Book Portfolio Strategy

Don’t forget, building a backlist is a form of book marketing in and of itself. The more books you have out there, the more chances someone will find you.

Okay, real world example time.

I got a sneak peak at a successful author's book business. He has over $1 million USD in Amazon royalty payments for the year. After expenses, he earns over $400,000 before taxes. I'd call that a win.

Who is this person? I'm not able to say, but I'm sure you've never heard of him. No one has. He publishes under multiple pen names to Amazon only. He has under a hundred books and most of that income was from fewer than 40 books.

That is how you can even the odds and hedge against what is clearly a tough market to compete in.

The kicker? That guy doesn't write a single word. It's all ghostwriters and editors.

He's not an author, but he’s built a massive book business with a portfolio approach. He’s a facilitator. He’s a book portfolio investor and is strictly in publisher/investor mode. He pays others to write and edit for him and then hits publish.

Think about it. If a non-author who doesn’t write a single word can earn $400,000 a year, think of what you can do as an author.

Your turn. Are you ready to start viewing your books as assets? Create a plan for your book portfolio, set realistic income targets, and give yourself the freedom to write what your audience would love to read.

The benefits of viewing things this way are many. Among them:

No more worrying over one book’s performance.
Acts as a hedge against potential ups and downs.
Each book adds to the collective weight of the portfolio.
Each book becomes an opportunity for a new reader to discover you.

Here’s a simple checklist to help clarify:

Set your target income and calculate how many books at what price point you’d need to reach it.
Diversify your genres or subgenres and pen names to appeal to different reader groups.
Track sales data regularly and cut back on promotional costs for books that underperform.
Double down on books that are doing well.

Personally, I’m going all in on short stories (which some people claim don’t sell and therefore don’t make any money). We shall see. To do that, though, I need to streamline and speed up my writing process.

I recently set up Google Analytics (GA4) for my Substack publication so I can get better insight on visitors, subscribers, and readers.

Since I’ve done this type of thing many times for my day job, I thought a walk through of what I did might be helpful.

What benefit does this have? Tracking, of course.

We all know by now, if you are posting links to your Substack on any other site (social media sites, guest posts, newsletter collaborations, Medium, etc.), you should have a way to track them.

More broadly, if you want to know where your traffic and subscribers are coming from and what they do once they arrive, this is how.

Let’s do a quick run-through on how to set up Google Analytics 4 for your Substack publication. I’ll use my Substack as an example.

I’ll also touch on Urchin Tracking Module (UTM) code and UTM links for better tracking from guest blog posts, newsletter collaborations, and social sites.

When we’re done, you’ll have more insight into your visitors and readers.

GA4 has its haters and it’s far from perfect. I'm choosing GA because a) it's free, and 2), it integrates easily with Substack.

This may seem technical, but if you can post to your Substack, you can do this.

Here we go:

Set Up Google Analytics

Prerequisite:

To do this, there are two things we need besides a Substack publication:

A google account
A Google Analytics account

You can't have a Google Analytics account without a Google account. You can use an existing Google account if you like (I did).

Need to create a Google account?

Once you have a Google account, sign in and go to analytics.google.com.

What you’ll see next depends on whether you already have a Google Analytics account (you won’t, if your Google account is brand new),

If you have an existing Google Analytics account

Once in your GA account, to get started, click “Admin” in the lower left of the screen (the gear icon).

You can either set up a new GA account or a new property.

In my case, I’ll create a new Google Analytics property in a GA account I already have. To do that, I click on “Create > Property”.

That takes me to this screen (Create property):

I used my Substack’s URL for the name of the property, but you can be creative. Select your time zone and currency.

On the other hand…

If you don’t have a Google Analytics account

You may see a welcome screen like this with an option to “Start measuring”.

After clicking the “Start measuring” button, you’ll hit the “Create an account” screen and will walk through the initial Analytics account creation and then onto the GA property creation.

Most of the information they ask either doesn’t matter or can be changed later (such as what kind of reports you want).

Choose a name for the Analytics account that makes sense to you and click “Next” to go to the “Create a property” screen.

The rest of the set up should be the same for either pre-existing or new GA accounts.

Choose a name for the property (I used my Substack’s URL, but you can be creative) and select your time zone and currency. Click “Next” to go to “Describe your business”.

Select industry category (pick one that’s close or choose other) and size of company. Click “Next” to go to “Choose your business objectives”.

Chose your objectives. I chose traffic and engagement/retention. Then click “Create” and the ToS page appears.

Accept the Terms of Service and that will take you to the data stream creation page (“Start collecting data”).

Choose “Web” for the platform and that will take you to “Set up data stream”.

Under website URL, I entered the URL for my Substack (if you’re using a custom domain, enter that instead). For the stream name, you can be creative. Click “Create & continue”.

Ignore the instructions on the following page (“Set up a Google tag”). As I explain below, we’ll do this a different way for Substack so we don’t need them.

How to copy and paste the Google Analytics Measurement ID into Substack

What we need next is what’s called the Google Analytics Measurement ID, otherwise referred to as the Google tag.

This Google tag is like a driver’s license number for your site. This is how GA4 will track your site's activity.

I’m not showing mine in the images here to eliminate any confusion so that my tag doesn’t end up on a website that can’t use it.

It starts with "G-" followed by numbers and letters in the format of G-XXXXXXXXXX.

Substack has some magic it does with GA so as I mentioned above, we can ignore all the instructions on the “Set up a Google tag” page. We don’t even need to copy the Google tag from here, a method that is prone to error.

Instead, let’s copy the Google tag to the clipboard a more reliable and easy way.

Close the “Set up a Google tag” page.

With the correct account selected, click on “Data collection and modification > Data streams”.

Under “Data streams”, click on the name of the data stream.

That opens the “Web stream details” page.

Click the copy icon next to the Measurement ID to copy the Google tag to the clipboard.

We’re going to paste it into our settings in Substack.

Hop on over to the Substack dashboard and open the settings for your publication (not the settings for your personal profile).

Click the Analytics tab on the left.

Paste the ID you copied to your clipboard in the top box where it says "Google Analytics Measurement ID".

Click the "Save" button.

That's it!

Substack will handle inserting that tag into the relevant code on your site to do the tracking.

Once the data starts showing up in GA, you’ll see it at analytics.google.com (make sure you log in with the correct account and select the right property).

Quirks of GA4

Now that you have GA4 set up, you should know it’s not perfect, no tool is.

These are the things it’s hard to get management to accept. Tools are weird, inaccurate, and all tools lie about something at some point.

It can take a good long minute for the data to show up.

If you don’t see any data in the GA dashboard, either something went wrong, you don’t have any visitors, or you just need to wait for the delay.

Despite the fact that GA provides a real time data view, GA isn’t a meant to be a real time data tool.

Yes, I know. It makes no sense.

Also, what shows up as real time data only stays there for 30 minutes. Those visitors won’t show activity in the non-real time reports until much later, often the next day.

So there’s this frustrating gap. The report can say you’ve had no visitors that day even if you have.

Yes, I know. It makes no sense X 2.

Have a look. The screenshot below is shortly after completing the above process and then visiting my Substack as a reader (to trigger the data).

This is often a little difficult to accept because the screenshot shows no visitors today on the left, but yet 1 visitor (me) in the last 30 minutes on the right. How can that be?

The real time data on the right literally only shows activity within the last 30 minutes or so (if at all). Then it disappears. In my experience, that activity won’t show up on the left until later, often the next day.

That means if we wait 30 minutes, both those numbers could go to zero. Awesome.

Equally awesome is the reality that tracking, in general, is deeply flawed for many reasons I won’t go into here.

Track Traffic Using UTM Links

Still, even with the quirks and flaws…

There are a ton of things you can do with your analytics data and there’s a lot of configuration trickery, enough to fill several books. I’m only going to briefly talk about using UTM links since that is what inspired this post.

What are UTM links?

You’ve likely tapped, clicked on, or copied and pasted a UTM link before. They are in wide use throughout the web.

A UTM link is a link that has UTM parameters added to it.

UTM codes or UTM parameters are snippets of text added to the end of a URL that provide additional information about that URL to GA4 (in this case).

They’re often used in ad campaigns or when linking from one site to another and tracking is needed.

Here’s one I found on CNN linking to Bleacher Report’s college football predictions.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10139545-college-football-2024-week-8-predictions-for-every-game?utm_source=cnn.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=editorial

Everything after the question mark in that link is providing data to the analytics software when the visitor lands on the page. It knows the visitor came from CNN as a referral as part of the editorial campaign.

When you couple GA4 with UTM links, you can better track where your traffic is coming from and which campaigns are effective.

You can also get a better idea of the journey people are taking through your Substack, how many pages they read and which ones, and how long they stick around.

You can use UTM links in ads, in newsletter collaborations, in bio links, and in links from social media, blogs, or articles you write.

The easiest way to format a UTM link like the one above is to use a tool, such as the Campaign URL Builder.

I plan to explore the topic of UTM links a little more in an upcoming post. The bottom line is, use UTM links when you want to know where your traffic is coming from.
